I simply will not look past merino wool for base layers now. Warm when wet, comfortable against the skin, quick drying, highly effective at wicking and doesn't stink.
If I were to recommend a brand. It would be icebreaker. Not cheap though. I only buy it when it's on sale.
Lidl periodically do merino base layers and they are ok. Not as good as the icebreaker stuff but amazingly good for the price. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Another for merino wool, but it has it's drawbacks. Cheaper ones can be a bit itchy when new, but this soon goes after a wash or two. Comparatively expensive. Tears easily. But you won't find a more comfortable base layer material. I've got a Rab cocono top which I like for a biking base layer, but you'll baulk at the price. However, keeps me warm in winter, cool when the sun comes out, and is very thin and so great for layering. As stinkwheel says, good wicking properties and dries very quickly in the slightest of breezes.
Currently when it's cold out, I use the Rab top (long sleeve) and a down jacket underneath my bike textile jacket, and I'm warm as toast. Down and Primaloft jackets with Pertex (windproof) are also great for wearing under a bike jacket because the jacket slips on easily over them, no struggle. I occasionally use a Montane windproof top (layered over merino), again Pertex. Thin as a fag paper, so again, great for layering, packs down to nothing if you want to take it off as the day warms up, light as a feather. Keeping the wind out effectively is half the battle. Pertex is also highly breathable. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Another quick question.. Finding my legs are getting colder than anything other part of me, I wear kevlar jeans with thermal longjohns underneath generally.. thinking of changing to textile or leather trousers? Is this best option or better bottom half base layer?? |
Jeans do nothing to keep the wind out, so thermals underneath them can't do their job properly. Textiles or leathers will definitely be much better.

I have a similarly cheap merino top that does this, but I find if you give the body a light few tugs whilst holding top and bottom when it is still damp from the wash, then just hang it up to air dry, you get it's length/shape back. My one is still effective after several years, and was the one that was itchy from new, but isn't now. Cheaper merino can be good ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Cheers, I'll try this. It's ok when hidden under kit but the crop top look isn't a good one on me when I take my jacket off. : ) |
Gather the hem together in one hand, and the collar in the other to do it. Don't yank too hard! I find the sleeves on mine don't need doing. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Keep an eye out for 'wind proof' long johns (I got mine on the Bay of Es), they make a real difference. |
That's interesting, I didn't know such things existed. I'll be looking for some now. Any more info on what I'm looking for, material, manufacturer? ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

@chickenstrip, cycle shops (Wiggle, Evans, or even a traditional local bike shop) sell windproof kit but it's not cheap. |

I'm specifically interested in the idea of wind proof long johns that go under other layers, as opposed to a wind proof shell trouser that goes over them - d'you think a cycle shop will do that kind of thing? ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

I was more meaning cycling orientated kit that'll be described as tights rather than base layers. |

Bugger, out of stock of XL, otherwise I'd have ordered now - at that price, no reason not to give them a go. I tried "wind proof long johns" in a Google search, but aside from a couple of American reviews for Knox etc, didn't get much.
Really, if I'm honest, I want them to wear under jeans, as when it's really cold, I'll use normal long johns under my textile trousers, but sometimes don't like all the bulkiness and would prefer not to look like I'm tied to a motorcycle when out and about, if that makes any sense.
How effective do you find the Spada ones? I'd forgotten about those - I believe Ox***d Pr*****s do similar now, too. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017
