Bought a Yamaha XJ6N, need some advice on chain and clutch.

The CBR600FS has been sold and replaced by a 2009 Yamaha XJ6N. Although the CBR was quick, the XJ6N appears much more comfortable for London streets.

It has 40,000 miles, has good history with servicing done on time. It starts first time and does not make any negative/ worrying noises.

However the chain seems a bit loose and on the swingarm there is only once notch left to pull the wheel back and give it more tension. Does this mean that the chain has stretched and needs replacing?

Also the clutch cable seems to be adjusted quite far out, would this indicate a new clutch is required soon?

And lastly how long should this engine be expected to last if properly maintained?

In my opinion, I'd have to ride the bike more to see how the chain wears. For example, when I put a new chain on mine, it took a lot of adjusting and it sort of bedded in. In that, I mean I generally only have to adjust the chain on the order of 000's of miles now. Ride it, keep an eye on tension. You have already bought it now so just see how it goes.

Clutch cable meaning the clutch is going.

No, it could mean that the clutch cable is going (stretched). Although on my bike, I can adjust the clutch cable down by the clutch cover and at the lever, has somebody just tried to tighten the cable up at the top without trying to adjust it at the other end?

Check your service manual you usually measure 10 links from the chain and if the length is more than recommended in the service manual yes the chain is too stretched and needs replacement. Means new chain and new sprockets.

About the clutch cable there is another adjuster down the cable. If you cannot adjust the stretch anymore you need new cable.

This is old R6 engine so if maintained properly you can do 100k and more.

If you run out of adjustment then your chain and probably sprockets almost certainly do need replacing.

I wouldn't even bother measuring for stretch on the chain links if you've only one notch left on the adjustment. Needs replacing soon, and replace the sprockets while you're at it if they have any visible signs of wear, i.e., haven't been replaced very recently.

I would change the chain and sprockets personally and check the clutch free play with what's listed in the manual ^^

That's quite loose for a chain, is that an on centrestand measurement or does the xj6 just run very slack?

It could be that you are short on adjustment becasue the previous owner put a smaller rear sprocket on or a longer aftermarket chain, so do check. A quick and dirty check is to grab the chain at the back of the bike and pull it backwards, if it comes away from the sproket by the height of a sprocket tooth replace immediately, otherwise do the ruler check described above. If your sprockets are excessively worn then replace chain and sprockets.

Change the clutch cable. They do stretch, or it could be a cheap pattern part that was a bit too long in the first place. Either way, they're cheap and easy to change.

On the chain, ride it and see. If it needs frequent adjustment it will need replacing soon. It could just have some odd sized sprockets.

Don't do work that doesn't need doing yet. Ride it for a while and see what other little problems creep out of the woodwork.
