As I was leaving work today, the whole of Elephant and Castle junction had been closed by police. Get home and later find out two motorbikes collided, and one of the riders later died.

One of the major complaints I've had about the junction is if you approach it from Newington Causeway (where the crash happened), the current phasing of traffic lights releases traffic onto the junction from Newington while vehicles are still crossing on what was amber for them when they passed the lights. Wouldn't be at all surprised if that's what's happened here.

One for the Londoners that ride that way regularly really but thought it was worth posting a heads up until they redesign it (again).

There's another bloody dangerous bit just up and around from top left. Where the road splits towards Walworth and St George's if you wait by the lights to go right those lights will release you into traffic still crossing your path from the left.
Coming the other way FROM St George's it's not apparent (nor signposted) that you need to get over to the left and it's almost impossible anyway with the buses constantly stuffing out so if you're on a bike and want to make it to the New Kent Rd you have a 3-lane gauntlet to run. Can be very tricky.

That's designed?

It looks more like the person who was holding the pencil had an epileptic seizure.

How's the Exhibition Road "shared space" experiment working out?

A quick Google implies that it's not working for footists and pedalists.

However, I'm wondering if there's an argument for going full Bombay in some areas of London and letting traffic sort itself out, rather than pushing onwards towards ever greater control and separation, with the inevitable consequences when it fails.

It would be worth trying, even that bizarre junction/roundabout thing above might work better with almost no white paint - once they got used to it.
The posts above suggest issues caused by lights turning green so people 'go' when it's not safe.
Some euro cities use flashing amber continuously which means proceed with caution pretty much - lights can go back to conventional stop go at busiest time or if the crossing becomes congested.

I'm mildly minded to opine that red should mean "give way".

There's a busy crossroads on my commute that flows much better when the lights are broken. People actually take turns. Shocked

Bombay all the way, Overload of information and the brain starts blocking and making assumptions based on speculation, and "seeing" is tge second thing after hearing to get the focus overlay treatment.. Usually experienced before running around in a circle repeating comforting actions ...

Are most people driving around one step away from repetitive circling madness? Wow Shocked

It strikes me that one guy walked home and the other never got home.. Crash mechanics are so fragile.. Thoughts to his loved ones.

A roundabout looks like it'd sort that mess out. Not sure why but where I live they're getting rid of roundabouts in favor of these multilane, multicrossing roads with a billion roadsigns that cause many more accidents.

I imagine the number of footists in London make light controlled junctions necessary. Also, if there are no red lights, how are pedalists expected to ride through them?

A roundabout speeds up traffic flow and can maximise movements through a complex junction, but makes it difficult for pedestrians to cross as the flow on and off can be almost constant.

They've been changing simple and efficient roundabouts to light controlled crossings for this very reason for years.
A side effect is to produce far more congestion - which is supposed to make drivers take train/bus/cycle instead - so green objectives addressed; also congestion tax is more easy to justify.

E&C used to have a pair of underground pedestrian crossings for this very reason. They were closed and filled in with concrete as part of works, and replaced with light controlled surface crossings.

The traffic is noticeably worse as a result, so I'm of the opinion doggone has the reasoning spot-on.

I preferred when it was just badly designed, badly signposted and mildly dangerous roadworks. Thanks OP for the heads-up on the traffic light phasing.

Really a big thank you to OP for pointing out phasing cos I occasionally go that way and OMG. There but for the grace of BCF.

Sad he died.

I posted about this abortion of a road design in the SE section.

It beggars belief how anything so complex and eye-wateringly dangerous can pass for modern road design. The congestion caused is also twice as bad as it was before they changed it.
