Lidl have an impact wrench in the upcoming auto essentials: https://www.lidl.co.uk/en/our-offers-2491.htm?action=showDetail&id=32190 Anyone have any experience with these or think they'll be any good?

Used battery snap-on ones before but obviously in a different league. Would the above deal with a fork damper bolt spinning for example?

I'm considering getting one as well. It's much cheaper than a battery powered one and it's limited to 100Nm, which means less chance of over tightening. The max loosening torque is 320Nm which should loosen most stubborn bolts on cars and bikes.

Edit: Forgot to mention that undoing the upper mount nut on a car strut is one of the reason I want one. I managed to round the upper torx which stops the strut spinning while undoing the nut. From what I've read an impact wrench should be able to spin it straight off.

Picked one up today. They only had 2 left, dunno if that's an indication it was a good buy. Will see how it goes.

I bought one too. I reckon it might come in handy when/if I want to get the centre stand off my bike ...

I just need any reason to take a wheel off my car. Just to feel like I'm in the F1 pits.

Never seen F1 teams trip over the power cord Very Happy

TBH when I worked in a garage that's what we mainly used these for, taking wheels off & on. I'm gonna see if this will get my fork damper bolt out, just need to buy a long 10mm allen key bit.

I bought one yesterday, while they still had plenty in stock.

Not used it yet,but will be useful, especially for those fork damper bolts that many people have problems with, including myself Embarassed

I bought one in hope that it'll get my front sprocket nut loose, I've tried a 3' breaker bar with no success so I'll report back tomorrow if I manage to get the fecker off.

Quality seems good for £30 and if not it's got a 3 year warranty...

What's the likely-hood of me shattering a regular chrome socket (30mm) undoing a 100ft/lb nut (possibly loctited)?

Holy jesus what a bargain. I have the snapon 18v cordless withsimilar spec. It cost me 200 second hand!!

Buy it! You can use whatever sockets you like. But after years of use itll wear them. This is normal. They last ages. I abuse my halfords sockets fine. Try choosing 6 sided ones over 12 if you can due to rounding.

The trick with stuck bolts is deblock penetrating oil or heat. And use a gun. But im talking of massive ones like wishbone bolts etc.

For 30 squid if it lasts for a couple of specialist jobs its paid for itself. Rinse and repeat.

Oh! Front sprocket bolts ... If it works for those, that'll make a once in a blue moon job soooo much easier.

I've bought one, had a quick ride to the Aldi at Witham and they still had loads left.

Looks okay. The quick release air fitting is a different size to the one on my compressor. I have pinched the fitting off my blowie uppie tyre thingie so I can try it out on one of my rear axle nuts. Will give it a go in a minute and report back.

Yes, mains atmosphere type.

I haven't got a psi reducer wossname so I ran my compressor up to 90psi before trying out the impact wrench on my Versys rear axle nut (27mm nut done up to 80 ft/lbs).

I noticed it didn't move at all, just hammered away, so I switched to the rear axle nut on my Africa Twin (24mm Nylock nut done up to 69 ft/lbs). It did exactly the same for a few seconds, no movement, then it started to slowly undo, then it span off like a good'n.

I decided to have another go on the Versys and this time I noticed that the split pin hole was not aligned anymore so it was actually moving very very very slowly. I decided to just leave it going and it did the same as the AT, after about a count of 5 seconds, very slow movement, then unspun quickly. No damage/edge wear to the nut.

Looks like the same thing I got off ebay for about the same price. I desperately needed one to remove the engine mount locknuts on my vfr. It worked, where before all I was doing with my breaker bar was bending the special tool's castellated prongs and camming out.

I was looking at compressors 'cause battery powered ones were hella £££ but then somehow a corded one appeared which offered more meat than (relatively) cheap battery ones and even mid priced air guns. Used it about 4 times now, well worth it.

Aldi are selling an air impact wrench, lidl the mains powered one. I've bought the lidl one, I'e not used it, but is fairly weighty.

How do impact sockets differ from normal ones?

Impact sockets aren't hardened, so they don't shatter in your face.....

If you wrap insulation tape around a normal socket, it stops it happening... As in, when they do break, they stay in the tape

320nm isn't too bad for the price/450w.

While we're on the subject, if you're after something a bit more portable, these are worth considering:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Liftmaster-Impact-Digital-Display-Configuration/dp/B0036YHBMM
(I've got a similar, though different brand one.)

They work by spinning up a flywheel which engages at an appropriate rpm for the torque set.
A lot slower than mains/battery/electric ones, but run from most 12v batteries and at 'only' 70w, should work fine from a bike too.

Takes a while, but got my wheels off nicely enough after they'd been put on at a tyre place.

To those of you in doubt as to whether they're any good (like I was), here's proof that it can get a stubborn sprocket nut off. Cheers for the tape on the socket tip Thumbs Up

If it's the 1000w clarke one - then over twice the power and 1/3rd more torque I think.

Good news. Did it happen quickly enough or did you still have to try penetrating oil soaking etc? Karma

I firstly heated it with a gas torch just in case it was loctited on, then I tried my 3' breaker bar as I was a bit skeptical about using a non impact-socket, that didn't work so I had to resort to the impact wrench.

First blast didn't seem to do anything about from make a horrible noise as though it had cracked, checked it, all ok. Second blast for a bit longer made a similar noise but this time it flew off Very Happy So definitely a worthwhile investment.

Disconnect the strut from the bottom hub, pull it outwards (out of the arch) it nips the shocker thread so you can undo the bolt without using anything else.
