The GPR is a great bike. Personally I prefer the old ones to the new. Can be picked up pretty cheaply and spare parts arent a problem. I never had reliability problems with my old Derbi Senda (same engine, just in an enduro frame,) so Derbi definitely gets a from me.
Remember, reliability is also down to how you treat it, so dont judge a manufacturer due to someone elses own bad experiences. I've heard that the TZR uses the AM6 engine, which can be found in pretty much all the other 50cc geared mopeds, RS50 for example, so it has a pretty decent motor.
If anything, go for the one which you prefer the look of. Not much difference between the two apart from the looks. Which GPR are you thinking of, one of the new style ones with the under seat pipe? ____________________ Aprilia RSV Mille R Edwards Replica - Aprilia RS250 - Suzuki GSXR600 Supersport Race Bike |

If you prefer the TZR, go for it. I think they are slightly more expensive because of the Yamaha badge but as I said, shouldnt be much different to the GPR or other race replicas.
How much are you looking to spend?
Not wise to go spending stupid money on a 50cc which will only end up getting dropped at some point, best to save more pennies for your 17, be it for a car or a bigger bike. ____________________ Aprilia RSV Mille R Edwards Replica - Aprilia RS250 - Suzuki GSXR600 Supersport Race Bike |

Nah mate they are pretty useless really, unless you come off on an even surface and your bike hits no other objects i.e. curb etc..
Personally i'd go for the RS50, although i am biasd. As for the reliability, as Keith said the TZR uses the same engine as the RS50, Reiju RS1/RS2, Motorhispania RX50/Furia so it has nothing to do with 'Japanese reliability'
I know of 3 people that have seized a Derbi 50cc engine now, and not one that has seized a moto minarelli (used in most other geared 50cc mopeds)
Personally i dislike the look of the GPR 50 but at the end of the day it's down to opinion, if i had to pick between the two i'd pick the TZR. But deep down i'd want an rs

Maybe consider a Yamaha DT50 or a Suzuki TS50 as they are cheaper and more reliable than other 50cc bikes. Also there is the Honda MT50 (whack a H100 engine in there ) Theres always the Cagiva Prima 50 or as someone else said a Kawasaki AR50. All these are quite cheap bikes and if treated with respect they won't need too much maintenance. That leaves you with more money to put towards a bigger bike
I bought an 1984 Honda MBX50 (Avatar) and it has been so reliable. Hasn't broken down once and had no problems what so ever. I have fallen off it once and I'm glad its an old bike with little fairing because if it had been an expensive sports replica the price to repair would have been enourmous. Just a suggestion but go for an older bike like some of the ones above. Good luck choosing ____________________ Honda MBX50 | Yamaha RD125LC | Suzuki RG125F Lucky Strike | Suzuki GSF600S

Deff not the tzr 50, it weighs more than my tzr125!
TZR50:
"Dry weight (kg) 113 kg"
TZR125:
"Dry Weight (kg) 108 kg"
You will be hard pressed to get any of these 50s but if you want my choice it would be GPR50 ____________________ DNA50 (sorry) ->> TZR125l >> GPZ500S |
