I have the above bike with 3 cylinders but the natural sound would be waaaangg, waaaanng but it sounds like its only firing from 2 cylinders and I have no power and the max speed I am getting is 70mph or 80mph on a downhill.

The bike sounds like a bag of poop and sounds like RRRR, RRRRR, RRRR ,RRRRRR, instead of the lovely above sound (sorry but that's the only way I could describe the sound).

I have had the carbs cleaned, I have reconnected the pipes so they're sweet and tight. I cleaned the air filter with 'Gunk' and so changed the spark plugs. The spark plugs were dirty and looked like they'd water corrosion on them. I don't know how when the sealing rubber was on it.

Does anyone know why it would still sound like a bag of crap and what I could do to remedy this so it can run sweet again please?

Are you getting a spark on the cylinder that isn't firing?

Typing noises, that made my morning

At hue check spark as above and while there check the plug condition. Is it wet, black biscuit coloured are the plugs new, when was the last time the caps were done?

I will check to see if there is a spark on all 3. If water had settled and corroded the spark plugs before, do you think it could get into the piston chamber and corrode more things down there?

Moreover, the plugs were literally changed yesterday and one of them had no gap but all 3 were corroded from water and all were black too.

I'll get the caps checked too.

Check the ignition coil. My triple did the exact same thing. Turned out the ignition coil on the first cylinder had ceased working. 30quid or so off the bay cured it.

Looks like this:

I figured it out by accident when I was fiddling with the fuel tap. I caught the lead going in and it suddenly barked into full life. Wiggled it again and it started popping and farting. Reading around they seem to be something of a common failure.

either one of the coils or the pick-up coil were quite common on those early triples, they've superceded a few times and the latest one is more reliable

or it may be repairable, quite often a crappy wire, you can easily solder a new bit of wire onto it, they go brittle and snap

It just so happens that a mate on mine said that the coil pack sounds like its gone. I'm going to try Sandy from Triumphant to see if he has a coil spring and I will also keep the other coul pack and see if I can solider another piece of wire, in case that's the problem.

Thanks everyone for your help, you've been amazing. This is the first time I've signed up to a forum and I wish I did it before, as I would have got out of plenty a situation Smile

If it sounds like it is only firing from two cylinders there is a very simple way to check, however, do NOT touch the header pipes to see which ones are hot. Wink
Squirting a bit of water on them and seeing which one doesn't create instant steam would be a less blister creating option. You would also have more sounds to describe.

However, I'm glad that you have solved the problem. Please describe current sounds. Thumbs Up
