Bought a used Dunlop Sportmax Roadsmart with 5.8mm tread across.

Thought it was a good deal at £36

It appears that it has some small damage where the bead of the tyre is.

You can see it in the second picture attached.

It looks like it probably happened when someone tried to mount/unmount the tyre using the tyre removal tools.

The damage is not on any area where the tyre will touch the ground.

What would you're advice be... to mount or not to mount?

The Only Half safe way to use that Tyre would be to put a tube in it, Where the Damage is means you will have a tyre going down slowly OR it will suddenly Deflate some day WHICH could end up with you getting KILLED. If it was me i WOULD not take the Chance.Francis

Drama queens are called Francis.

The bead is an important part of the structure of a tyre. If you are confident that it will seal and the main carcass isn't damaged then go for it. If you're not happy, get a refund. In reality no one is in a position to tell you what YOU should do. (I learned how to use caps from Francis)

I'll have a couple of ponds on the fact that it won't hold air.

Many years ago I had a tyre with a kink in the bead just like that. There was no damage to see except a little nick so I fitted it to my GS550. I got the bike out one Saturday morning and was just getting ready to set off when the rear tyre literally exploded as I sat there outside my house. The bead wire had rusted through right where the kink was.

I realise that modern tyres might not have a steel bead wire but I just wanted to highlight the fact that the tyre was not obviously damaged to any extent but it let go in spectacular fashion.

I thought you were a better person than that. The poor guy has an obvious caps-Tourette issue and you naturally assume Tefalitus? Shame.

I can't help the fact that I feel the need to point at spackers.

Actually, that's not entirely true: I can help it, I just don't want to.

Personally, when it comes to tyres, I wouldn't chance it.

I'd rather wave goodbye to the £36 than wave goodbye to the air inside it while riding.

That tyre is brand new looking, so why isn't it on a bike?

I'll tell you for why, because they damaged the bead fitting it and it leaks

I wouldn't fit that to my bike. It really isn't worth taking the risk.

Tyre is perfect. Just bang some bead sealer on the damaged spot and fit it then forget. All these people saying no dont understand what they see. The whole bead sits on the rim so unless that whole flat bit is damaged i wouldnt worry.

Genuine question, Under what circumstance would somebody sell a perfectly workable part worn tyre? Thinking

Nine times out of ten I buy a used bike and replace the tyres for what I want on there.

Send it back and get a refund.

Even without the damage, £49 for that tyre is a bit steep.

a fair few bikers buy a bike with tyres or buy tyres, dont like them and replace them, ive had a few almost new look like under 200 miles use tyres from a tyre wall at a local main honda dealer as some people just dont like the tyres they use.

im changing my tyres soon and my fronts got a few k miles left on it but i just dont like it.

it barely heats up and when it does it loses it within 30 seconds of stopping.

it all depends on what they want the bike for, buy a hypersport with touring tyres for hooning around youd want to change them.

the local main honda dealer is full of people that have stupidly expensive shiny exhausts and they want the best.

Apart from when they blow out because of damaged cords in the bead due to the bead being overly stretched when forced over the arm of the machine that was used to remove it. Which is what normally causes damage like that. Roadsmarts are prime for this to happen as they are rock hard.

I keep part worns on the shelf, but only if I have removed them and checked them.

When they have chunks missing like that they are normally a bugger to blow up to seat the bead in the first place. I just bin them if there is any damage like that regardless of age or tread.

Thanks for all the helpful replies.

This part worn tyre has now been sent back to the seller.

Went to the local bikeshop and replaced the rear tyre with a new one.

Went with what is recommended in the owners manual.

For a Yamaha XJ6N it is recommended either to fit a Bridgestone Battlax 021 or a Dunlop Roadsmart.

Went with the Bridgestone tyre, as the bike already had a Bridgestone tyre on there but it was a 023.

This was a learning curve! next time its just easier and safer to buy brand new!
