just thought I'd share a quick pick of the build quality of my msx

This msx is 20 months old (August 2014) and has done 8000 miles.

I decided to repaint the exhaust headers as they look shit. In that time, the nuts which attach the heat shield have managed to rust up entirely so that they sheared as I tried to remove them.

It's a bit shit for something this age.

So how often did it get a clean and polish then?

Can't expect something that gets blasted by all the crap off the road to last long without some TLC.
Did you have a mud flap to help keepp crap off it?

Even if it was somewhat neglected, with regards to cleaning, I'd still expect it to be in better condition than that for a named brand less than two years old tbh.

Is it still under warranty?

Have you contacted Honda about it? I would be doing so.

Those parts are what usually rust first on most bikes so no surprise really. MSX's are made in Thailand so maybe not as good as Jap made?

THIS.

My Kwak is about 1 and a half years old and it does have rust on the pipe but nowhere near as much as that. There's also patches of nice shiny metal here and there, and the crap scrubs off pretty easily with some hammerite + autosol and some steel wool.

Shouldn't be that bad imo, contact Honda.

Washed maybe once a month, but never polished, it's a painted exhaust. Polish would burn off and stink.

It is fitted with a fender extender, but if it needs a fender extender for a component to last 2 years, should it not be factory fitted with one.

I've not tried asking for warranty. It's not Honda serviced, as the intervals are every 2500 miles. I do it myself so the warranty is not valid.

Spend the morning with a wire wheel and some vht paint

On the subject of fuck honda, look at how they butchered the CBR600RR.

2004 model looked so amazing compared to their new model. What the fuck are those headlights?

The CBR600RR is now discontinued anyway (some left to sell but no new production).

Honda build quality is a very long way from what it used to be. The Africa Twin demo bike at the local dealership already has a few small rust spots on the frame.

The new Africa Twin has attracted quite a bit of criticism on a number of fronts, including spokes and rims apparently suffering from mild corrosion after only a few weeks. Hard to believe, but that's what folks are posting elsewhere Confused

Personally, a lot of stuff that people complain about is down to a simple lack of cleaning but you must wonder what happened to the build quality of old.

Wait what? When was this announced?

They have an ugly 2016 model. Is it 2017 they'll stop production or are they just using 2015 models and registering those in 2016?

Meh. Yamaha master-race.

Bike Magazine, May 2016, page 10.

They quote a 'source at the factory':

"Unfortunately EURO4 legislation will kill the CBR. We cannot justify the cost of further development fees on such a small number of sales anymore. The US were our ally with this model, but now they are also suffering with poor sales. We're not actually making CBRs any more - I think the last were produced in 2015. There are some in dealer stocks, but there won't be any more."

Shame as the CBR600RR was one of the last bikes with HRC-like build quality. And one of the last interesting models left in the range.

I'm sure someone at Honda is determined that the entire range must be dull and poorly built. And they'll stick with it unless people stop buying their bikes.

My CRF isn't too bad to be fair.

CBF not so clever.

That exhaust looks fairly bad unless it drove the whole distance over salty beaches.

Headlight-s?

Oh yes, so it has, there was me thinking it was a ringer for Maggie Simpson's mono-browed nemesis.

Not to sound too old (hmmmm), but back in my day, Honda was the epitome of motorcycle build quality. Some chap thought my in need of TLC Superfour was only three years old t'other day :/

Best I take good care of ickle Grommet, being made of cheese and all.

my honda msx 125 is the same and is out of warranty as theres no way i am paying £130 for an oil change and valve clearance every 2500 miles just for warranty!!!

meh...........

the motul 7100 10W30 oil costs me £13 off ebay and the valve guages cost me £5

my exhaust is like yours but the nuts i have taken off and regularly put copper slip on them in the hope they dont act like yours
when my exhaust rots through ill just buy an aftermarket full system

the rest of the frame i treat with either chain lube or acf50

the metal quality on the honda msx 125 is terrible and cheap and to keep rust away you have to treat it with acf 50 or chain lube or if your that desperate wd40

im not happy with motorcycles customer service i think there rude and wont be getting any money from me ill get my official parts from motorcycles who are nice and friendly

'kin hell, Honda!

Repeated reports of this happening on Honda's flagship "true adventure" bike:

Could they not just whack copper nuts onto the exhaust studs?
Its one courtesy the bastard car manufacturers seem to have picked up on over the last I dunno.. Decade or so?!
More than makes up for putting the Turbo/Exhaust manifold in a 1/4 inch gap berried within the back of the engine bay...

If I ever have the exhaust off my 600 it's going back on with copper/copper coated nuts...

I put them on my Enfield early doors after snapping a stud on the Burgman. I'd have done the Tractor too, but it appears to have some Godless Eurofasteners on it. Mad

I read that Africa Twin thread a bit further, and it just goes on and on and on with folk reporting that spoke corrosion (or finish damage) after 200 miles, 100 miles, a single dry ride. And "my dealers demo bike which has been used all weathers..4 thou mile on it. the wheels are totally scrap". That's the bike that they're showing to customers!

This cracked me up:

mike5100 wrote:
I was at my local northern UK dealership on Friday (ordering an NC750 X Smile and the salesman didn't seem to know about this problem. His own bike was the shop's AT demo and I pointed out the corrosion on the rear spokes - there was none on the front - he hadn't realised that this would not clean off. They had also the previous week had an argument with an AT purchaser who had bad corrosion on both wheels but he had ridden through the worst the UK winter can throw at it and (they said) he hadn't cleaned it as recommended. They are a very good dealership, and my bet is they will be re-contacting the customer after I told them about this thread

There isn't an <animated-eye-roll.gif> big enough for that level of delusion.

The silence from the motorcycling press is, as usual, deafening.

Motorbikes are expected to dissolve.

Unless you treat them with a new finance package every three years. Shocked

Well to be fair they've seen BMW get away with it for years.

How much will sales be affected though? Pack a few journos off to South Africa on an all-expenses paid trip and all will be forgotten right?
