Hi guys.

I live in Northern Ireland and im looking at buying my first bigger bike and iv narrowed it down to a GSXF, i like the sport look and this seems to be the best choice. Not alot of choice around here for a2 legal.

I have a choice of two bikes at the moment which im looking at

1996 GSX 750F
Black
13,000 miles
mot until july
12 miles since last mot said its been laid up and he hasnt been riding it just looking to sell now
£1150 - slightly negotiable.

no stickers on fairings though which im wondering why ?
also says he knows the previous owner.

https://www.gumtree.com/p/suzuki-motorbikes/-1996-suzuki-gsx-750-f/1162858413

or

GSX600F
black
32,000 miles
will come with full year mot
comes with new back tyre also
rack for back box and panniers
£1500 - NON negotiable

no ad as a friend of a friend selling it

Could anyone offer some advice towards these? and which would be best to choose, thanks alot.

I've a gsx650f 08', it's my first big road bike and I like it. I know it's not glamorous and is basically a Bandit in a dress, but suits me fine. And it's bullet proof.

In a year or 2 once I've cut my teeth, and made some school boy errors on it, I'll change it for something nicer. But I can't fault it so far.

They'll never set the world on fire but they are solid enough. I'd choose the 750 over the 600 though.

I've also got a GSX650F, fine power for me for fun and commuting. I know there are a lot more powerful bikes out there, but I do think this one is a lovely ride. Comfy for long rides and fun for the weekend.

Also a perfect bike before moving onto something a big bigger. (Which i plan on doing next year, here i come busa baby)

My first big bike was a GSX750F from around 1995. Lovely engine, comfortable to ride and cheap to insure. I don't recall any particular problems - just the usual age related issues. Also the carbs needed balancing quite often to run smoothly.

I'd certainly recommend the 750 over the 600, unless you are particularly set on having hard luggage. The brackets are very difficult to get hold of now and I see the 600 has them already.

It's quite an easy bike to work on but carb cleaning and balancing is something I'd normally leave to a pro. That said, I'm useless mechanically! Other basic service items e.g. oil, filters and even fork oil (there is a drain hole at the bottom of the forks) I recall being simple enough.

I doubt it will even need new fuel.

Oil and filter change, drain and fill with fresh fuel if you want to be pedantic. Possibly a new battery if the owner has let it go flat for a few months.

Start it Thumbs Up

When I bought my GSX600F it had been off the road for 5 years. It did run a little poor so I got the carbs balanced but the dealer fucked my bike up worse. Eventually I had to get the carbs stripped and cleaned, I got it set up on a dyno too and now it runs lovely. So yes, be prepared to get the carbs sorted.

No stickers on fairings means respray or replacement fairings. Check for crash damage.

Older moldels have steel perimiter frame and clip ons, i think this is where you are at. Engine is similar to bandit and many parts interchangeable, but is tuned differently for a bit more top end. Tough but corrosion prone.

Gsx650f is same frame as bandit and not as sporty a riding position.

How many miles do you anticipate doing a year? If it's a toy and you hace a car, it will likely be less than 4k, if you plan on commuting more then 8k a year is common. Make sure you have enough years use in the bike.

Engine needs valve clearance check every 8000 miles, the low miler might never have had this done. It cost me 100 pounds at a main dealership as it's piss easy on a bandit, expect to pay similar. I would get this done ASAP if in any doubt on either bike, along with a proper service (including filters, plugs, oil, brake fluid flush), which can be done yourself for about 50pounds. As said above a carb fettlkng mkght be needed, but you might get away with draining carbs and runnkng some fresh fuel.

fit braded brake lines if the bike is a 96 and still has originals.
