So I decided I might buy the Prez a set of hair clippers to go with the unspeakably posh man-smell that I bought him today. A razor and foam-gel-goo is one thing, these are quite another territory into which I have never ventured.

And I need to know:
(aside from the obvious) ...

* Hair clippers: does this include body hair?

Do you have to have separate:
* Beard and stubble trimmers
and/or
* Nose and ear clippers (yes yes, but why can you not do that with an extension to the beard trimmer?)

Would you buy all of those as opposed to an all in one grooming kit? Why? Why not?

If it's hair and beard these are the ones to get.
It might be a bit more than you initially thought but more or less *the best*. Al lot of lesser ones will do well to last 2 or 3 years.
I expect you can trim other bits with it too.

It is MY birthday today and being someone with very short beard / muzzy who wishes to keep those in control, but with such limited scalp hair that attention is rarely needed, I arranged to acquire

Perfectly adequate. I had one previously but being a twat I left it in a hotel room overseas.

Same thing with slightly more "gadgets" which personally I would never use.

LOTS of other option with some at stupid prices. These things DO get blunt so in my view better to buy cheaper and replace every so often --- like we are talking every 5-10 years.

For some reason I assumed they would be rechargeable on a little stand.

Do you not stand at the bathroom mirror and do it, then?
(that's where it appears to usually be performed with the razor: head, chops, miscellaneous other beard-trimming activities).

Both the cheapo Babybliss ones are NiCad or similar rechargeable batteries. That means no wires etc while you use it and it will run 20-30 mins on a charge ---- usually enough for a few trims if you take the thing on hols . . . . but do not leave it in the hotel room like I did.

I've had the Babyliss iTrim before, was good but I didn't use it enough, and the in built battery ended up fucked.

I've got a Wahl beard clipper that is awesome. I plumped the extra for the lithium ion cordless one. That thing can go months without charging (literally... I lost the charger for 11 months, yet was able to use it weekly without any loss of power). It also has a fair bit of horse power for chomping through coarser hair (could be handy for non-facial hair I suppose). They do a hair version...

But that might be a bit large for more intimate grooming (ears/nose etc).

I have the beard one, which comes with nostril attachement, precision trimmer and a wider head which would make fairly short work of the hair on top of your bonce.

I had a Remington cordless shaver with ceramic blades that was awesome - i used it everyday, lasted about 6 years unyil i dropped it an shattered the blades

I have replaced it with a Wahl* with titanium blades an its pants, so im on the hunt for a new set too

I've had the same Wahl clippers for 16 years and they're still going strong.

I'm looking to replace them, but only because having them mains powered means dragging an extension lead to the bathroom which is frustrating.

The numbers are actually 8ths of an inch for what difference it makes. My Wahl clippers also have a slidey thing that does half sizes sort of by moving the spacer forward and backward on the blades.

The main difference between head trimmers and rest of body trimmers is the size of the cutting head on the trimmers. Given a human head is a reasonably flat area (ok, round, but nothing jutting out), you can use a big wide trimmer to cut the most hair at a time.

Big trimmers are much harder to get around areas like the nose, or the gentleman sausage if that's your thing. So trimmers designed for the rest of the body generally seem to have a thinner cutting head (like an inch or less across the blades rather than 1.5 inches for head trimmers). Hair is mostly the same no matter where it's sprouting from, so the trimmers will work anywhere, but trimmers that are designed for the whole body will take longer to do a big area like the head purely because they cut less at a time.

I've rambled on a bit, but hopefully that makes some sense.

As for recommending a good product - I've been in the process of replacing mine for about 2 years and still not found something that looks as good quality for a reasonably price - given I could buy new blades and spacers for £20. Still, let us know what you go for, I might be convinced.

I use Scherna trimmers for my hair. Very good - had them for years.

Philips trimmer for beard n bits. Again good. Can wash under the tap.

Both of the above are ceramic blades so no oil required.

I use Aesculap clippers for the dog. Very expensive but would trim your gorilla

Hmmm, he wouldn't use all those combs. Only likely to use number 0 or 1, nothing else suits that "Geezer" look, really does it. Perhaps #2 if defurring the gorilla in the summer, I suppose.

I guess going for a Wahl might be a good start, can always donate the "longer" combs to a worthy cause.
And maybe a Babyliss for the nostril/ear conundrum.

Is the oil to stop it from rusting? I used to use an old safety razor for years on my legs/pits when I was growing up; I was fairly low maintenance* so didn't use it for ages, and in between it always got a bit "rusty" where I used to leave it out on the handbasin, invariably in a puddle of soap and water. I just used to scrub it with a toothbrush and fit a new blade when I wanted to use it again
