Hi all, thought it might be good to post here for some advice. Im 24 years old from Northern Ireland and its pretty grim lol, pretty impulsive with ideas and stuff too, i tend to jump from one thing to another quite quick.

Never really been sure about what i want to be/do in life as a career always switching. I currently work in a phone shop the last 2 years fixing mobile phones/electronics ect. Its a good job but pays minimum wage and is pretty boring and id eventually id like to move away and do some travelling ect. Im pretty into bodybuilding and currently enjoy training and thought about personal training, but i have kind of gone off this idea now. I was thinking since im really into bikes about bike mechanic but id have to go to England for this course as i dont think its offered here.

I would like to travel to either Europe/USA/Australia to do some work and travel and bike but generally i dont have a career or any useful skills i feel i could get a job with or i could stay here and work a job and travel on bikes back and fourth and do the things i want to do. Im really confused could anyone offer some advice or help in direction, thank you Smile

When you hit 30, what would you like to be doing? How about 40?
What do you need to do to get there?
There are many helpful texts that will help you get where you want to be. Setting goals is just the start.

The plan may change as you mature, but if you don't start with something you'll just drift.

Jim Rohn's books, Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich. In short their teachings are to believe in yourself, improve yourself and go after what you truly want.

I just cant decide what it is i actually want to do, i have hobbies and interests but nothing i could make a job out of.

In the interim may I suggest security guard, especially nights.

You basically get paid to work on your own projects, educate yourself etc etc, it's a really good job for people who don't want a job.

I spent most of today trying to track down a particular backpack I want, interspersed with the occaisonal patrol around the building. I get paid to do what I do at home anyway - sit around on the internet.

Cautionary Note: In some ways it is too easy, I'm sure I could actually attempt to use my degree and get a proper job, but that would end up requiring that I actually do something. The pay in my job is slightly above average with minimal effort.

I did almost put that, but decided that it's not really paying work.
The best you can hope for is some movie/advertising/documentary/music video work, but that wouldn't keep you in DC Shoes for long.

Plus the Circus act would work well with his his thirst for travel!

When I was at school, I was given a book to look through; a big, thick volume it was, "A-Z of Careers", and there was nothing in there that interested me Laughing

News flash, very few people really know what they want to be when they grow up.

Work is only one aspect of life, and not everyone can be a billionaire playboy motogp porn star.

If you don't like where things are - change it.

Idea You should have invented Facebook.

Life's hard and then you die.

For most people when you are young you don't have time or funds to do half the things you want, then you get old and could do them but don't particularly want to anymore.

Number one rule should don't keep putting things off - it's not a dress rehearsal.

Most people don't have a grand plan. Anyone who knows what they want to do and then gets to do it is just bloody lucky. The rest of us follow a path of least resistance and fall into something that we can do ok and doesn't suck too much. People think they have a right to jobs they enjoy. Pff. If it was fun they wouldn't pay you to do it. Find something not shit and then make the most of life outside work.

Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think.

I was just talking about this to my colleague yesterday. Trouble is, you can think of a perfect job that will suit you and find out it's boring/stressful/complete shite. Likewise you can get a job that sounds shite but you may enjoy it.

There's no real way to find out if you like a certain job, other than to try it. There's also the matter of money. How desperate are you to earn lots of cash, or could you still survive on minimum wage? If what you're currently doing is not enough money, ask about training and career progression. if they don't offer it, maybe find somewhere that will?

On the other hand, you're 24 and want to travel. How about a working holiday visa? Australia, Canada, New Zealand and some others will take you. You may find like I did that you find a job you really enjoy. I worked in an Orange packing factory for 3 months, very long hours but was bringing home £300 a week in cash, and that was throwing boxes around and driving forklifts without the required license.

The world is your oyster, don't do what I did and end up in an office job with little career progression and earning less than the national average. There are sacrifices to be made; i.e. you may sacrifice more money in favour of getting onto a sturdy and interesting career ladder. Or you might have to put up with being a junior for 3 years before you get anywhere.

Whatever the case, keep in mind that there are thousands of people in good jobs who are not entirely competent, so in theory you stand as much chance as anyone else with similar experience. You just have to weigh up what you want out of life, when you want it, and what you're willing to put up with in order to get it. Time out, or work in another part of the world can be a good start or at the very least gives you some paid self-reflection time.
