Hi all

I'm after some advice regarding tyre wear, my front tyre seems to be disintegrating very quickly, it has worn it self down to the mesh over 6 months, while the rear remains pristine, most of my rides are commute at regular speeds, mixture of motorways and A roads, no knee downz of warp speeds involved.

Any clues ?
Thanks in advance

How many miles do you do in 6 months? Are you using the same tyres front and back?

Low pressure?

Any fast right handers where you are using excessive front brake?

If it were a car, I'd say the tracking is out. Doesn't really apply to bikes though.

Heavily cambered roads?

One front shock knackered or empty of oil?

Misalignment between front and back? You can check this using the string method relatively easily https://www.motorcyclistonline.com/how-to/how-to-check-front-and-rear-motorcycle-wheel-alignment-mc-garage-tech-tips

Misalignment seems the most likely cause, low tyre pressure would show wear on both edges.

BT021. Normal and suggest you steer clear of 021.

My FZ6 came with BT021 on front and back. Front one wore down the sames as yours on the one side.

Got Bt023 on front and back now, much much better

Nope. Misalignment will not cause abnormal wear on a curved motorcycle tyre. It will cause the handlebars to be "pissed" and in the wrong place , but turning is still done on the same curved bit of the tyre. I know this because my 250rr has some significant misalignment. The frame is a little bent Embarassed however Has no effect on the bikes feel or tire wear.

I knew this when I bought it, and I do have a spare frame, but I see no need to fix it.

Thanks for the many replies, in answer to the above.

Mileage in 6 months was round 3.5k, the rear tyre is like new, both got replaced at the same time.

Bridgestone Batalax front and back.
Could be taking right handers a bit too hot, will keep an eye on it

Shell Grip, it's a bastirt on tyres. Smile

You will get points for that 1000 miles ago.

Law: More than 1mm tread across 75% of the tyre's tread area and as a continuous pattern.

Peds need same rules but only 'visible' tread.

PoPo would have had kittens if he/she saw that Sir. Smile

As above, the Battlax BT-021 front does wear quickly and into a nasty profile. The 023 is much, much better; it lasts longer and wears in a normal shape as you'd expect.

Will keep an eye on the cornering not on the tyre.

Will get it replaced on Tuesday, and not ride until then.

Thanks again all, indeed would have been shafted with a nightstick if I got pulled with a tyre in that state

Shocked

That's properly disappointing. I've put 8000 on a rear BattleWing with loads still to go, and the front 'Wing which has (possibly many) more miles than that on it is only just coming up for replacement.

I meant to order an 'Ax replacement just to try it out, but it was past wine o'clock and I accidentally bagged another 'Wing. Now I'm pretty glad of it. BattleAx seems too be too far on the "sports" side of sports-touring.

There's more than one type of Battlax. On the Divvy 900 I was getting about 15K miles out of a Battlax BT-023 front, about 10K out of a rear. They would wear normally (a little bit of squaring off). The BT-021 front it came with managed about 6k miles, and the last few of those had handling on the "interesting" side.
