Bike is kept garaged overnight.
I have a chain and disc lock currently but they're both old, rusting and not very good. Had to remove the alarm as it was a parasitic draw.
What do you guys use when parked in public places, any chain lock recommendations etc?

I always carry my Almax IV.

Unless I'm going somewhere really dodgy, in which case I'll re-evaluate my life or take the car.

I usually just use a disc lock to test my memory (no dementia evident yet).

Really? all the posts and threads on here about locking up your bike? you really need to ask? Eh?

Chain it to an immoveable object like a lamp-post or railings.
Don`t leave it in a very quiet spot.
Use more than one chain & lock.
Look where the cctv is pointing/looking at. Thumbs Up

Or park next to a bike that's locked up with an Oxford chain. Wink

Really? Which size and how do you manage that? I've got a 1.5M & 2M to retain ownership of my fireblade. They are seriously heavy.

Either 1.5 or 2, I don't remember, but it doesn't matter. It goes in the tailpack and I barely notice that it's there.

Aout & About; just a good disc-lock.. an old one made of metal, rather than Chinky-Cheese! But augmented with a thickish cable. Cable eyes on the disk-lock, cable round a lamp-post, railings type thing.

Dick-lock on it's own, deters a wheel-away, cable deters a carry-off. Fts nicely n the panier pocket. Easily luggable & easy to use/carry.

Could take the Almax.. but rather heavy and inconvenient to stick in the paniers! And out & about, chances of finding anything I could park close enough to get it round are slim; and round the back wheel on its own, would just be as much use as a dick-lock and more of a pain to carry and attach!

Also have an Oxford 'Heavy-Duty' Chain & Padlock. I think its 2.5M. No where near as substantial as the Almax, but a bit more than the cable. Reasonably luggable, takes up a bit of space in the panniers.

Gets packed 'as required', say I am going into the city (Cov or Brum) and expect to be away from the bike more than an hour or so; or if I'm going to an event & expect to be leaving the bike parked up all day.

Ride a bike which the scrotes don't want. My K1100LT is one example, but there must be others. Who else doesn't bother with locks?

I'm sorry I wouldn't ever be one of the take a 19mm chain to town and smugly walk around all day, assuming you can even get it on the bike and not damage anything.

A cheap disc lock, and a lighter chain through each wheel with at least one of them secured to a solid fixed post/railing etc is my preferred choice.

My reasoning is that I bet most thieves don't run home crying when then see one really big tough chain and lock stopping them lifting a bike. And vice versa I don't think they are jumping for joy if your bike is secured with 2-3cheap locks and chains.

Just because a lesser chain is often croppable it don't mean many theives want to stand around cutting 3 Oxford chains just to get your bike.

It's my theory that's all, but several layers of cheap security are IMO better than one really big high end 19mm thing.

If a thief has got cutters then all three of the oxford chains will be cut. If a thief doesn't have cutters then you only need one oxford chain.

It takes very little time to cut a crappy chain, there's lots of videos on youtube where people demonstrate how blatant you can be using bolt cutters to steal a pushbike that's parked in a busy public place.

Nobody is going to notice that your bike is being stolen and even if they did notice, they don't care enough to do anything.

One uncroppable chain is many times better than three Oxford chains.

Almax. Anything else is just a deterrent, albeit the entire Oxford 'cheese' range...

Almax or Pragmasis chain 16mm or bigger. Squire SS65CS or Abloy 362 padlock plus Motrax Vishas disclock because bad ass. Must be 8 years since I last had a bike stolen, bikes that got robbed where 'secured' with cat pi$$ chains that where cropped on the street by scrotes.

Really easy with a tail pack. Done it for a year now, no damage. Little effort. Using a 19mm chain delays my journey by just a couple of minutes at each end.

I use a Xena XS301 its pretty tough, big enough to go round a post and through the bike wheel but can be put through the rear wheel if you cant bolt it to anything, also its pretty light and easy to carry.

Other than that, paint your bike bright pink and glue dildos to it and i'm sure no one will steal it!
