Wifi range boost?

Ahoy ahoy ahoy.

I'm with Virgin and have the superhub thingy.

Now. The speeds wireless-ly are very good downstairs but upstairs the signal can be a little lacking, so far as having no signal in the back bedroom.

I've had a quick look on ebay and for sale are some devices that get plugged in which supposedly pick up the weak signal, amplify it and emits that signal. Are they as good as they say?

Also, if they're rubbish, could you provide me with links to what I would need to solve this issue?

I had the same issue with the Superhub. What helped a lot for me was to use an external router plugged into the Superhub and that extended the range. I switched the Superhub to 'modem mode' to do this. Not really what you expect from a 'Superhub' but it worked for me.

Chuck the hub in "modem mode" and grab a Netgear WNDR3700 then chuck ddwrt on it.

WIFI ALL THE PLACES!

What are you connecting to? And have you tried basic stuff like changing the channel first?

If its a proper puter then get a new network card with external higain antenna, if it's a laptop or similar then you'll need a new router, but I wouldn't recomend the one Cansa posted simply because it doesn't have replaceable antenna. If you find you need a bit more oomph still you're kind of stuck.

I use an Asus AC56U, which does a solid 250mbps across opposite corners of the house (probably 10m in a straightline, through 3 walls and the floor.

£17.99 WiFi extender from Argos (TP Link) did me alright. Cheap and cheerful and the signal no longer drops. Plug it in near the hub, let it connect to it wirelessly (using WPS) and then move the plug where it can still pick up a good signal, somewhere between the hub and the area you're looking to reach. It's about as easy as any solution can get.

Upstairs, the missus struggles with her laptop. Also we bave some wireless cameras we use to spy on the birds, the signal is very slow and thus the picture is very stop starty and sometimes no signal at all.

I might try changing the channel on the hub now and see if theres a difference. What do replaceable antennae routers have as a bonus? Does the antenna help boost the signal more?

Does ddwrt effectively boost the wndr signal even more?

I tried using a couple of different wifi extenders and found them to be unreliable and slow.

It's not perfect but it was easier and cheaper than upgrading my router.

OK, step forward has been taken. I won a WNDR3700-100UKS "300 Mbps Gigabit Wireless N Router".

And it'll be with me probably by end of the week. I like the feature of having my hard drive plugged into it so stuff on the network can see that.

Anyway, I've been on that ddwrt wesbite, and I'm possibly being very lazy, but I can't really see how to download what I need to download. I found the supported devices tab and found some versions of that router, not sure how I'll know unless it's on a sticker on the unit when it arrives. EDIT - oooh it's a v3, I found that out ...

This webpage is the wiki for it, is it a case of following some simple destructions ?

In the Wireless tab, put a tick in the "advanced settings" box.

Look at TX Power and Antenna Gain.

Why does this build not have access to USB, under services? I only have access to Services, VPN and Hotspot. To a hard drive across a network would be swish!

EDIT - Assume it's in the Mega build (link enclosed to the download) ?

I assume this build gives more awesome buttons that I probably don't need access to as a basic user?
