Hi guys,

Been Riding an FZS 600 for around 2 years now and am looking to upgrade but I don't really know what to get. I know I don't fancy any litre bikes.

But I like the look of Street triples and the Daytona 675 and pretty much all the 600 supersports.

Is there any other bikes that are very similar to the street triples that I should know about?

Also my Budget is max 5k.

I'm asking here because I've only ever ridden 1 bike so any opinion is good.

Thanks

Rob

Get to dealers, sit on bikes and find out which you feel comfortable on. Then get test rides.

The only reference you have at the moment is one bikes, you need more to make a choice.

But if I'm test riding I'm going to be on a new bike. And I'm not looking to buy new so am I really going to be the benefits.

And what if I drop one of their bikes at the dealers?!!!

You don't have to test ride brand new bikes, they can offer test rides on older bikes too after popping a trade plate on it. You have to sign paperwork that says you are liable for any damages caused and have to leave a copy of your licence and card payment details (just in case). My main ride is one that I took out on test from a main dealer. I signed away my life, they handed over the keys and told me to come back before the end of the day and leave some petrol in the tank, thanks and have fun!

Although some dealerships are reluctant to offer test rides to riders with newer licences so give them a bell before you get there.

Definitely get yourself somewhere with a good selection and be prepared to spend some time checking them all over. If you have a style of bike in mind that would make the process easier but go and sit on as many as you can and see what type of riding position you find comfy. Grab a salesperson and pick their brains, strike up a conversation and see if you can get some haggle-room over price or possible servicing/accessories.

Don't ask, don't get and all that.

Yer that sounds like an idea.

I'm pretty confident with cars and when going to buy a new car as I recently bought one and as I'm a taxi driver I'm a confident driver. With bikes it feels totally different and I don't really have the balls to just go test ride them. Maybe I should man up and all that!

I will go look at some this weekend and sit on some before I test ride anything.

Does anyone know what bike would put a big grin on my face after owning a fazer and what bikes I should look at that I hadn't mentioned.

The early MT-09's are around £5K now, look for one with a better rear shock if you can and enjoy. They should have had the throttle sorted by now with a re-map.

As said, they should let you test a used bike but some dealers are reluctant and charge you a deposit which you get back after if you don't buy it.

Triple will be slower than your current bike.

It will handle better and feel better too but you'll not have much more excitement unless wheelies are your thing.

Come off it, the triple is slow. You know and I know it.

It will handle better than a Fazer but you'll get outpaced by one on the open road. Any sports bike will crush you and make you look inferior while you squeeze ever last drop out of it.

Was yours broken?

I've ridden a Fazer, 85bhp if you're lucky, The Street is about 40kg lighter, has 10 more bhp and is geared absolutely perfectly... Sure it's no S1000R, but it's amazing for the capacity.

Nothing impresses you Paddy, short of a GSXR1000. That is probably quite a sad (and probably dangerous) place to be in reality.

No, mine wasn't. The GSXR doesn't impress me, I like having a machine that trumps most things on the road.

I'll live far shorter than the majority on here, whether thats through cancer or just a multitude of other illneses that plague my already ruined body...so why not enjoy myself.

The Fazer is just a slightly detuned Thundercat with different head. Plenty of videos of the slightly later FZ6 racing hard. A well ridden Fazer will stomp a triple ridden by an average user.

I'm not going to get all personal because life is too short, but for someone who has trouble riding a fireblade and lacks pace on a mini bike... you sure are quick to pass judgment. Razz

Should add that I have nothing but positive thoughts towards you MarJay, nothing harsh intended Thumbs Up

The Fireblade thing is down to the fact that I weigh 10 stone, and it's next to impossible to get the bike to work for that weight unless you do a serious suspension re-work. Incidentally I've done that on the Triple. The pit bike racing...? Well, put it this way James Hillier of TT fame raced at Matchams and his best result was second. A world class TT racer couldn't win a race... what does that tell you? I've also improved massively as a rider due to the pitbike racing, and knocked something like fifteen seconds off of a laptime over the course of my racing career.

But of course, my riding career affects the speed of the bikes I own... Oh wait...

I've ridden the latest Street Triple R and nearly (still tempted) bought one on finance on the spot. It, in my humble opinion, is a absolutely amazing bike. I'd happily tour, commute and hoon on it without any regrets.

It's the quickest bike I've ever ridden other than my friend's Fazer thou. Definitely faster than a 90s fazer or my ZX6R. I don't feel the need for any more power than that, you start sacrificing handling due to additional weight and where's the fun in that?

A 90's ZZR600 would stuff a triple... your ZX was far faster Shocked

I am in absolutely the same boat with my Fazer. Initially did not wanted litre bikes. Still not keen on them.

I test rode Striple. For me it's a lemon not an upgrade. Fazer is better IMO.

I have looked at many 600cc and ZX6R gets very close to my next bike.

The problem is I really like Fazer seat and position. The only bike that so far comes close to it is BMW S1000R.

Still undecided. Let me know if you find something Thumbs Up

Do you? The Triumph is a relatively light bike, as it goes. But why do you think that more power necessarily means more weight? For example, the Ducati Streetfighter 1100 is 1kg lighter and 40bhp more powerful. The Ducati 1299 is 2kg lighter and a whole 90bhp more powerful! Most superbikes are within 15kg of the STR (dry weight), and all are much more powerful.

That aside, handling isn't only influenced by outright weight. Weight distribution is important. Unsprung weight is important. And that's not to mention endless variables in terms of the chassis and suspension components and settings. Again, as it happens, the Triumph is pretty well sorted in these respects. But so are other, more powerful, bikes.

I'm a little sceptical that the old Fazer 600 is a quicker bike on the road (same rider etc.). But a modern Supersport 600/675 (anything since the B1H) certainly should be.

Fortunately it looks like Triumph are soon to release the 765. Hopefully that will inject a bit more life into the ST/STR. But then again, it could just be the easiest way to meet EURO4 without losing performance, a la Ducati 899 -> 959.

Shall we go back to your requirements? What is is that you wish the FZS did better? What will you be doing with the new bike?

As it happens, I had a go on a FZS600 this weekend and I thought it was a jolly decent bike. The ergonomics were great, it felt like it had a bit more usable torque than a CBR600F, plenty more power and top end than a Bandit, and went and stopped very well.

The reason I didn't buy it (or rather, won't be buying faithless75's Box-Eye which should have a year's ticket on it tomorrow, hint hint) is that it was too quick for my tastes and purposes. I quickly got out of my comfort zone chasing dem revs.

So I'm not really sure what upgrading an FZS600 means in practice, unless you're regularly reaching the limits of its performance.

I'll get me pipe and slippers.

I'm riding the MT-10 on Friday, might put a thread up about it as the bike mags say the 2 are very closely matched.

Not that the Multistrada is not awesome, but it does seem to want to self destruct and I'm really struggling to gel with it. I wanted a more touring style bike but I think I went too far and yet I know I will miss the power rush... The MT-10 has identical torque and much less weight Twisted Evil
