 |
|
Right, so I've got this embarrassing personal problem in that every time an overtaking opportunity presents itself, my testicles retract and instead of dropping a cog or two and bouncing off the rev limiter I reach for my pipe & slippers and turn into Captain Sensible.
Generally I won't overtake unless I'd do it in a (slow) car or I know the road really well. Even on wider roads when someone has pulled over a bit to let me pass I'm like 'Nope **** it, not in a rush. I'm just going to sit here and cruise along' but really I've just pussied out.
Yeah, on the one hand, CB500 so it's not really got the 'Engage Warp' mode that bigger bikes have but coming off a roundabout it can still pull past most cages like they're parked. I reckon when it hits 8k rpm it's maybe like Warp 1 - just enough power to prepare you for 'proper' bikes.
Anyway, yeah, I suck...
Edit: for reference, I'm coming up on 7k miles bike experience. ____________________ Honda CB500S |

My MT-03's enough to dispatch cagers with ease, so you can't blame the bike here
I'm the opposite, even on a 125 no way would I sit behind a slow cager. The only exception would be if traffic's reasonably heavy, and there isn't much benefit to 'making progress' will I stay in traffic. Also if there's an opportunity to filter further up, then it can be best to delay an overtake (but less fun). |

Overtaking means you're on the roads at risk of potatoing for less time.
I don't think drivers puling closer to the kerb to make it that bit easier for bikes to overtake is cause for complaint.
Why would you not overtake? If you want to sit in traffic at the speed limit and not filter / overtake then you should get a car with air con and an awesome stereo.
When you're going to overtake be decisive and don't dither around or unnecessarily hesitate. A CB500 can easily do more than 100 so you can get past them nice and quickly without much fuss. |

What techniques are you using?
Best tips from me are:
1) Don't do the angry wasp hanging around the rear of the car's bumper, drop back and get a better view.
2) Don't be afraid to be over the centre line to increase visibility where you can see the immediate path is clear. It doesn't take much to tuck back in if there's an oncoming car and it'll help you to assess whether to commit and gun it. Do this early, before arriving on the back of the car you're going to pass.
3) Read the road signs and the road centre white line markings - if you're on a section of road with no hazard warning lines then the chances are what you see in front of you really is what's there, nothing to worry about. If you're on hazard warning lines and it looks clear, have you seen a sign for a hidden dip, or a small side turning to the right, for example? Don't take anything for granted, but use all of the information available to you.
4) If you're on normal road markings and you're going to go past fine, but what are the lines going to be like when you've completed your overtake? Can you see far enough ahead to know you're not going to come back into lane across a solid white line, for example, and what hazard is ahead meaning there is there a solid white line coming up? Can you leave yourself enough time to get back to an appropriate speed to deal with that hazard?
5) When you're thinking about it, get the bike buzzing in the right gear for maximum launch; and when you commit just get the job done. Most of the time one gear and a few seconds of throttle are all you'll need, no need to go fully mental, end up at 100+ MPH and be warp speeding into the next bend you've not even planned for yet - just use the maximum power you have for the shortest time possible to get past and tuck back in, and then re-plan for the rest of it.
And lastly, don't sweat it. Comes with practice and best to have patience than to have an accident. |

Thinking about your feedbacks, there is a lot of 'Do I... don't I...?' hesitation and lack of commitment. And I think I probably do need to practice properly caning it actually because I'm only getting into the giggle zone once I'm already nearly past the bloody thing I was trying to overtake.
I know, I know - nothing to prove and I don't follow close behind things because I like a little reaction time / space, I just feel like I should BRAAAAAP because biker innit? And it get's a bit embarrassing when you have a crappy nissan up your exhaust because you're not overtaking a truck.
Here's a thing: if you have a singe white line, can you overtake if you can do it without crossing the line?
On the plus side, I've been doing more filtering lately and damn that is satisfying! ____________________ Honda CB500S |

https://bearacer.xyz you're lucky in a way that you have a constant power 4 stroke, I occasionally get stuck under the powerband going up a hill trying to overtake a lorry and couple of cars thinking, I'm almost there then I'll have a load of power but at the same time trying to look for oncoming cars at the top of the hill.
If you don't like being such a pussy then remember you can fit between two oncoming cars and probably a lorry / double decker bus. |

Think about it in terms of what average speed you want to maintain on any particular road. If the traffic is slower, overtake it at a steady pace. If the traffic is going at the speed you want to go, just stick with it... Its daft getting into the mindset of having to overtake just because there is something in front of you, as that is playing Russian roulette for no appreciable gain.
