A bit of a weird one....

Recently, when going down the pub, I've been getting pretty drunk off not a lot of alcohol, for example today, I had two pints and two rum and cokes, I'm feeling pretty gone after that.

Do you think this could be the start of a serious problem?

Since about November I have been down the pub almost every night, getting ruined at the weekend, and I think I finally broke something. Shocked

About three weeks ago I had about a litre and a half of rum, since then I've been pretty feeble, I can't drink anywhere near half as much as I could and I'm starting to feel rough in the mornings, this is a new experience for me, I never have hang-overs. Never.

Anyway, that's my internal monologue spilling out. Thumbs Up

Seriously though, drinking every day cannot be good.

This is your liver telling you to slow down.

Very heavy drinkers often get to a stage where it doesn't take a lot to be drunk because the liver is not functioning properly so it can't deal with the alcohol.

The good news is you're young so if you give your liver a break it will recover and get most, if not all function back.

So lay off the spirits and anything stronger than beer (and I don't mean Tennants Stupid and the like) all together for a while.

Oh yes, and finally, a litre and a half of rum? You tit Shocked Rolling Eyes

Not necessarily, if cirrhosis has set in then you're in serious trouble.

You fit the medical definition of an alcoholic.

The good news is that it's summer biking season, so your chances of a transplant are higher.

Seriously, knock it on the head, you don't have a special mutant healing factor.

Eat before and during the drinking. Drink fresh water/beer between the liquor. Thumbs Up

If you still can't handle your drinking, give up and find a healthier hobby. Thumbs Up

I feared it might be early signs of liver damage, it could well be...

I was supposed to have a clean May, but so far it's been completely the same as usual. I then decided not to drink this week but using the seven day calculator thing on drink-aware, I still achieved about 30 units for this clean week. Rolling Eyes

I think I've took advantage of being a pretty tall, fairly fit twenty one year old made of rubber with a fast metabolism, but it would appear to have bit me on the arse.

I'd slow it down a bit. Totally agree with Tracey here, give yourself a break.

I'm no saint and was a heavy drinker (in the pub pretty much everyday after work). Realised that drinking was getting in the way of things that I wanted to do and hangovers got progressively worse. Now I can have a glass of wine or two or a cider and stop without feeling like death the next day. Just keep it in moderation.

Plus drinking in the pub is a rich mans game.

I'm an old bastard compared to you, and get 6-8 hour hangovers after a big session these days. Unless I'm away on a beach holiday, I try to have a minimum of a day on the booze and a day off it after as a rule.

I tend to get smashed every 2-3weeks on average, but it's kind of quite nice and enjoyable to go out properly drinking after bring all tea total for a couple of weeks.

Not necessarily. Cirrhosis takes some time and some really heavy drinking and/or genetic predispositions to happen. Thumbs Up

Drinking every day, often til you get drunk, for 6 months straight.

You need to come on here to be told this is a bad idea?

I think it may be time to go home, and think about your life.

It might be a good idea to contact Alcoholics Anonymous, not because you're an alcoholic, but just to get some expert advice. Also you could talk to your GP, they may be able to do some liver function tests.

"Do you think this could be the start of a serious problem? "

A 21 year old drinking habitually and frequently getting drunk? What's the problem with that?

Are you a student? Are you a tramp? Are you in full time employment?

It's only one of two things:

1) Liver Cancer
2) Type II Diabetes
3) You are in fact a Woose (spelling)

Or a combination of all of the above.

I suspect your liver is twice its original the size now. Any tenderness in your abdomen?

I'd slow down. In fact I'd stop drinking. I had something similar many, many years ago. Collapsed one day with massive pain - turns out liver was nearly ready to give up completely. Couldn't drink for 6 months.

The liver is pretty cool, it can recover from a lot, but if you push it too far, you're fucked.

Laughing
I remember chatting to a mate when we were in our mid thirties.
Do you think I drink too much?
Nah, probably not, how much are you drinking during the week?
Well, most nights I end up having a bottle of wine...... and the other nights I'll have two.
Shocked
He'd been doing that since the OP's age. Full time job, pleasant guy, just liked a drink. He was an alcoholic.

OP, google the medical definition of alcoholic, I strongly suspect you may be in for a surprise.

It took many months for him to accept he had a problem and to eventually seek help. After rehabilitation, relapse, and another rehab he remarked to me that he felt he had missed out on a lot of his younger years because he was using the alcohol to mask other issues he should have been dealing with. He had a lot of regrets about that. He also has permanent liver damage.
I've pretty much lost touch with him - he's moved away and changed his life a lot. Sadly, some of his closest local friends were the enablers who continued with the invites down the pub (mate, just have a soft drink, what's the problem?) even after he'd rehab'd the second time. I think that was a big part of why he's moved away, and hopefully moved on.

Alcohol use disorder

Definition

Alcohol use disorder (which includes a level that's sometimes called alcoholism) is a pattern of alcohol use that involves problems controlling your drinking, being preoccupied with alcohol, continuing to use alcohol even when it causes problems, having to drink more to get the same effect, or having withdrawal symptoms when you rapidly decrease or stop drinking.

Unhealthy alcohol use includes any alcohol use that puts your health or safety at risk or causes other alcohol-related problems. It also includes binge drinking — a pattern of drinking where a male consumes five or more drinks within two hours or a female downs at least four drinks within two hours. Binge drinking causes significant health and safety risks.

If your pattern of drinking results in repeated significant distress and problems functioning in your daily life, you likely have alcohol use disorder. It can range from mild to severe. However, even a mild disorder can escalate and lead to serious problems, so early treatment is important.

Symptoms

Alcohol use disorder can be mild, moderate or severe, based on the number of symptoms you experience. Signs and symptoms may include:

- Being unable to limit the amount of alcohol you drink
- Wanting to cut down on how much you drink or making unsuccessful attempts to do so
- Spending a lot of time drinking, getting alcohol or recovering from alcohol use
- Feeling a strong craving or urge to drink alcohol
- Failing to fulfill major obligations at work, school or home due to repeated alcohol use
- Continuing to drink alcohol even though you know it's causing physical, social or interpersonal problems
- Giving up or reducing social and work activities and hobbies
- Using alcohol in situations where it's not safe, such as when driving or swimming
- Developing a tolerance to alcohol so you need more to feel its effect or you have a reduced effect from the same amount
- Experiencing withdrawal symptoms — such as nausea, sweating and shaking — when you don't drink, or drinking to avoid these symptoms

First of all in writing this reply to the OP I don't want to sound sanctimonious , and in my younger days lived life to excess , had a good time and drank quite a lot, things changed later on in life especially with my job , that is my employer operated a zero tolerance in regards to alcohol, for example I could pass a breath test on the way to work , and if it showed any alcohol I could be sacked, and quite rightly so as I was a train driver. I decided to stop drinking , just to save my job really , but it was the best thing I could have done , that was 18 years ago and I still don't touch alcohol, I find I don't need it to have fun , I have been retired 2 years ,don't have to take any pills at all, still do weights and jog and the happiest i've been in my life, alcohol is a depressant , beside the hang overs it will change your character

Are you 12? You sound like a kid trying to impress everyone with your drinking skills. Nothing worse on a night out than people being competitive over how much they can down.
