A bit of a weird one....
Recently, when going down the pub, I've been getting pretty drunk off not a lot of alcohol, for example today, I had two pints and two rum and cokes, I'm feeling pretty gone after that.
Do you think this could be the start of a serious problem?
Since about November I have been down the pub almost every night, getting ruined at the weekend, and I think I finally broke something.
About three weeks ago I had about a litre and a half of rum, since then I've been pretty feeble, I can't drink anywhere near half as much as I could and I'm starting to feel rough in the mornings, this is a new experience for me, I never have hang-overs. Never.
Anyway, that's my internal monologue spilling out. ____________________ Current:1991 Honda MT50 (Soon to be a H100/MTX/MT5 hybrid), 1976 Honda Cub C70, 2005 Honda Varadero 125, 1993 Yamaha TTR250 Open Enduro , 2010 Road Legal Stomp YX140, 1994 Honda CRM 250 MK III, 1999 Cagiva Mito 125, 1992 Honda CB400 Super Four, Stomp T4 230, 1984 Honda H100s, 2009 Sym XS125K

This is your liver telling you to slow down.
Very heavy drinkers often get to a stage where it doesn't take a lot to be drunk because the liver is not functioning properly so it can't deal with the alcohol.
The good news is you're young so if you give your liver a break it will recover and get most, if not all function back.
So lay off the spirits and anything stronger than beer (and I don't mean Tennants Stupid and the like) all together for a while.
Oh yes, and finally, a litre and a half of rum? You tit ____________________ Whether you think you can, or think you can't, you're probably right |

The good news is that it's summer biking season, so your chances of a transplant are higher.
Seriously, knock it on the head, you don't have a special mutant healing factor. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Eat before and during the drinking. Drink fresh water/beer between the liquor.
If you still can't handle your drinking, give up and find a healthier hobby. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

I feared it might be early signs of liver damage, it could well be...
I was supposed to have a clean May, but so far it's been completely the same as usual. I then decided not to drink this week but using the seven day calculator thing on drink-aware, I still achieved about 30 units for this clean week.
I think I've took advantage of being a pretty tall, fairly fit twenty one year old made of rubber with a fast metabolism, but it would appear to have bit me on the arse. ____________________ Current:1991 Honda MT50 (Soon to be a H100/MTX/MT5 hybrid), 1976 Honda Cub C70, 2005 Honda Varadero 125, 1993 Yamaha TTR250 Open Enduro , 2010 Road Legal Stomp YX140, 1994 Honda CRM 250 MK III, 1999 Cagiva Mito 125, 1992 Honda CB400 Super Four, Stomp T4 230, 1984 Honda H100s, 2009 Sym XS125K

I remember chatting to a mate when we were in our mid thirties.
Do you think I drink too much?
Nah, probably not, how much are you drinking during the week?
Well, most nights I end up having a bottle of wine...... and the other nights I'll have two.
He'd been doing that since the OP's age. Full time job, pleasant guy, just liked a drink. He was an alcoholic.
OP, google the medical definition of alcoholic, I strongly suspect you may be in for a surprise.
It took many months for him to accept he had a problem and to eventually seek help. After rehabilitation, relapse, and another rehab he remarked to me that he felt he had missed out on a lot of his younger years because he was using the alcohol to mask other issues he should have been dealing with. He had a lot of regrets about that. He also has permanent liver damage.
I've pretty much lost touch with him - he's moved away and changed his life a lot. Sadly, some of his closest local friends were the enablers who continued with the invites down the pub (mate, just have a soft drink, what's the problem?) even after he'd rehab'd the second time. I think that was a big part of why he's moved away, and hopefully moved on. |

Alcohol use disorder
Definition
Alcohol use disorder (which includes a level that's sometimes called alcoholism) is a pattern of alcohol use that involves problems controlling your drinking, being preoccupied with alcohol, continuing to use alcohol even when it causes problems, having to drink more to get the same effect, or having withdrawal symptoms when you rapidly decrease or stop drinking.
Unhealthy alcohol use includes any alcohol use that puts your health or safety at risk or causes other alcohol-related problems. It also includes binge drinking — a pattern of drinking where a male consumes five or more drinks within two hours or a female downs at least four drinks within two hours. Binge drinking causes significant health and safety risks.
If your pattern of drinking results in repeated significant distress and problems functioning in your daily life, you likely have alcohol use disorder. It can range from mild to severe. However, even a mild disorder can escalate and lead to serious problems, so early treatment is important.
Symptoms
Alcohol use disorder can be mild, moderate or severe, based on the number of symptoms you experience. Signs and symptoms may include:
- Being unable to limit the amount of alcohol you drink
- Wanting to cut down on how much you drink or making unsuccessful attempts to do so
- Spending a lot of time drinking, getting alcohol or recovering from alcohol use
- Feeling a strong craving or urge to drink alcohol
- Failing to fulfill major obligations at work, school or home due to repeated alcohol use
- Continuing to drink alcohol even though you know it's causing physical, social or interpersonal problems
- Giving up or reducing social and work activities and hobbies
- Using alcohol in situations where it's not safe, such as when driving or swimming
- Developing a tolerance to alcohol so you need more to feel its effect or you have a reduced effect from the same amount
- Experiencing withdrawal symptoms — such as nausea, sweating and shaking — when you don't drink, or drinking to avoid these symptoms

First of all in writing this reply to the OP I don't want to sound sanctimonious , and in my younger days lived life to excess , had a good time and drank quite a lot, things changed later on in life especially with my job , that is my employer operated a zero tolerance in regards to alcohol, for example I could pass a breath test on the way to work , and if it showed any alcohol I could be sacked, and quite rightly so as I was a train driver. I decided to stop drinking , just to save my job really , but it was the best thing I could have done , that was 18 years ago and I still don't touch alcohol, I find I don't need it to have fun , I have been retired 2 years ,don't have to take any pills at all, still do weights and jog and the happiest i've been in my life, alcohol is a depressant , beside the hang overs it will change your character |
