On the eastbound carriageway just past the Hanger Lane underpass the lanes narrow and a 30mph speed appears. All that is fine, what I don't understand is why there is a sign there saying 'Narrow Lanes - Do not overtake cyclists'?

Is there some cycle superhighway supposed to go there? That would be the last straw on that road. Its pretty packed as it is, and if that happens I am getting an electric bicycle.

I've seen similar around Ilkley as they're doing some gas works. The lanes into and out of the town are very narrow so there are signs saying "Motorists do not overtake cyclists".

Needless to say, everyone ignores them. It's them saying, it might be too tight to overtake cyclists.

Advisory, and appears to be abuse of these signs which are A) not DfT approved and B) supposed to be used only at roadworks with lanes under 3.25m in width and a 20mph limit.

As always, if inappropriate signage is being used, you should feel free to point that out to the appropriate road authority.

This is only temporary. Looks like they’ve narrowed the lanes while working on that new Park Plaza hotel. The cyclist signs are only there because I think they’ve closed the pavement which would force any cyclists onto the carriageway. Unless they switch to the opposite side of the A40 which would be a major pain for the cyclists. If it was me I’d take to the road for a few minutes of mixing it with the HGVs then hop back on the pavement just before the BP garage.

I think the cycle super highway is mooted to be created using a single lane of the Westway flyover, however with the departure of Boris it will be interesting to see if the project stalls.

The narrow lanes totally screw up motorcycle filtering though. Can’t wait for them to go.

I wouldn't as they just narrow the lanes more and put a 20mph speed limit, just because Smile

Bet cyclists are allowed to overtake.

You're allowed to overtake, it's purely advisory. It's not like they'll be following any of the actual road rules or laws themselves, right?

The signs do two things - point out that bicycles are allowed on that bit of road, and that it may be dangerous to overtake them. If you've been told not to, then you are at least going to (hopefully) think about a clean overtake rather than doing a punishment pass whilst yelling abuse.

You'd hope that any cyclists who risk the A40 would be fit and fast anyway, rather than a granny with a basket, so not a major hold up (if any) in heavy traffic.

A cyclist would have to be insane to try the A40 at the Hanger Lane underpass. They'd be better off juggling hand grenades with the pins out while being attacked by a pack of wolves. How about a sign saying 'cyclists f@ck off and go somewhere less mad.'

All right, I get that a bunch of middle aged, lycra clad weirdos want to get their rocks off by holding up traffic in London instead of buying a gym membership but FFS, are we now expecting them to achieve kamikazesk levels of suicidal stupidity and cycle down the A fucking 40? Jesus wept.

On Victoria Embankment last year they had a sign "No overtaking cyclists". That made me chuckle, because all the cyclists do there is undertake at speed. Then one day it disappeared and "Do not overtake cyclists" was put in it's place, so I guess I wasn't the only one to spot the irony in the wording.
