How do they get away with air cooled? I thought emissions have basically killed them off.

On the bike, not bad. Ge shot of that horrible exhaust though.

Air cooled v twin, tear drop fuel tank, twin rear shocks, low ish looking seat height.... Looks like a cruiser with a taller rear sub frame and dual sport tyres.

Manufacturers are basically making factory versions of these hipster garage bikes that seem all the rage. I prefer this to someone discombobulating a perfectly good old school bike mind you. Plus it'll be cheaper than a 'special' and have a warranty!

It is interesting, that they can still produce air cooled machines, especially for the American market, as some of the states in the USA have even more strict emission regulations than the EURO IV is. Well, it does produce next to no power, for such displacement. Thinking

The article does not say, but 3 seconds on the google and I found the claimed wet weight should be 547lbs. (248.34 kg). Which is reasonable, being a modified cheap cruiser.

Source of the claim (in ENGLISH): https://www.revzilla.com/common-tread/yamaha-announces-new-2017-scr950 Thumbs Up

Well, the ZX7R that I had, was about 235 Kg wet, and that was an actual sports motorcycle. So, 250 Kg for a fashion statement, with 80 Nm of torque, should be alright. Thumbs Up

I really don't get this 'torque is good without power' bollox

No good having a bike that can get you from 0-30 in a nano second but then takes 5 episodes of the Archers to get to 60 mph.

Similar sort of power to weight ratio of an 1989 NSR125. In a 2016 950cc bike.
Progress!

Be that as it may, it is just a cheap fashion statement. If you want power, then don't buy a cheap air cooled V-twin cylinder motorcycle. Thumbs Up

That's a fat, lazy abomination of a "scrambler" and Yamaha should be thoroughly bloody ashamed of themselves. They were doing so well, I hope this is just a temporary aberration.

Sorry, hadn't realised the xv950 was a current cruiser in their line up; I should have googled before posting! In the olden days before 'proper' moto cross frames, manufacturers started doing what consumers did to their road bikes; strip them of weight to make them less of a handful off road and bolt on some scrambler 'features'. They'd have been better off doing this to one of their standard style bikes I reckon.

A bit risible as an actual scrambler, given the weight, belt drive, etc, but it does look quite nice in a sort of guilty pleasure shouldn't-say-you-like-it-because-it's-a-hipster-bike sort of way.

It's my understanding that large-capacity, low-output air cooled engines have less of a tough time getting through Euro 4, hence things like this and the Harley 883/1200 engines will still be available.

Whoever is in charge of designing rear lights at Yamaha has let themselves slide. Looks like a chinese ebay bolt-on job.

Possibly one of the daftest bikes I have seen for years - looks like the bastard child of an 883 Harley/SR500...

The XV series and derivatives have lost their way some.

XV535, 46bhp (yamaha claim, 38 measured by MCN) 55mpg (fuelly mean, 46mpg MCN test) 190kg wet (owners manual). Forward thinking exhaust system with an under-slung collector box/silencer, that may have been designed with upgrades for a cat in mind. Self-cancelling indicators probably more advanced than the engine management.

XVS650 gains a few ccs in the engine, which is returned for more low down torque and lost the enthusiastic top end, 229kg wet. Has become a barge and no-longer obliterates sportsters, but it passes emissions test. Similar fuel economy.

XV950 (and engine donor XVS) resort to a 2-1 exhaust for the cat, looking enough like a generic slip-on system whilst not being compatible due to intagrated cat/silencer. 52bhp and 247kg is a bit lacklustre but likely all that is achievable whilst keeping within emissions. Updated for 2016 emissions it's even more disappointing. Fuel economy is a relaxed 52mpg.

Either yamaha have missed the boat here, staying air cooled when partially hidden and subtle water cooling is the way forward, or they have perfectly targeted their styling exercises. I like the looks of the current XV and SCR, but their performance is disappointing. That said they have the capable and mildly retro base covered with the MT derived XSR.

As part of my retro-stupid I have been playing Final Fantasy VII as it runs on my little laptop, a bonus for gaming away from home. I had a most retro attempt at filtering coffee through my nose onto the keyboard when I realised cloud's bike was a (1985-2007) V-Max with some mild customisation, notably a headlight reminiscent of the MT09. The dark side of japan is made of FF fans.
