It is interesting, that they can still produce air cooled machines, especially for the American market, as some of the states in the USA have even more strict emission regulations than the EURO IV is. Well, it does produce next to no power, for such displacement. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

The article does not say, but 3 seconds on the google and I found the claimed wet weight should be 547lbs. (248.34 kg). Which is reasonable, being a modified cheap cruiser.

Well, the ZX7R that I had, was about 235 Kg wet, and that was an actual sports motorcycle. So, 250 Kg for a fashion statement, with 80 Nm of torque, should be alright. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

Be that as it may, it is just a cheap fashion statement. If you want power, then don't buy a cheap air cooled V-twin cylinder motorcycle. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

That's a fat, lazy abomination of a "scrambler" and Yamaha should be thoroughly bloody ashamed of themselves. They were doing so well, I hope this is just a temporary aberration. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Well, it is quite the same idea. Hardly a Davidson had their XR 1200 made out of a cruiser as well. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

The XV series and derivatives have lost their way some.
XV535, 46bhp (yamaha claim, 38 measured by MCN) 55mpg (fuelly mean, 46mpg MCN test) 190kg wet (owners manual). Forward thinking exhaust system with an under-slung collector box/silencer, that may have been designed with upgrades for a cat in mind. Self-cancelling indicators probably more advanced than the engine management.
XVS650 gains a few ccs in the engine, which is returned for more low down torque and lost the enthusiastic top end, 229kg wet. Has become a barge and no-longer obliterates sportsters, but it passes emissions test. Similar fuel economy.
XV950 (and engine donor XVS) resort to a 2-1 exhaust for the cat, looking enough like a generic slip-on system whilst not being compatible due to intagrated cat/silencer. 52bhp and 247kg is a bit lacklustre but likely all that is achievable whilst keeping within emissions. Updated for 2016 emissions it's even more disappointing. Fuel economy is a relaxed 52mpg.
Either yamaha have missed the boat here, staying air cooled when partially hidden and subtle water cooling is the way forward, or they have perfectly targeted their styling exercises. I like the looks of the current XV and SCR, but their performance is disappointing. That said they have the capable and mildly retro base covered with the MT derived XSR.
As part of my retro-stupid I have been playing Final Fantasy VII as it runs on my little laptop, a bonus for gaming away from home. I had a most retro attempt at filtering coffee through my nose onto the keyboard when I realised cloud's bike was a (1985-2007) V-Max with some mild customisation, notably a headlight reminiscent of the MT09. The dark side of japan is made of FF fans. ____________________ Bandit. does. everything. |
