Hi all,

I am looking at purchasing a new bike and it's down to the two above. Do any of you have experience of riding them and which do you think is the better bike?

Usage: The bike will be used for some limited commuting and weekend play times.

History: I'm coming from a Fazer which to be fair is an excellent bike and instilled a lot of confidence in the way I rode. Prior to this I had an ER6F. A fancy something a bit quicker.

I have taken the CBR600f for a test drive and I like the ride and handling. The test ride was only an hour and in that time I got on with the bike a lot better than I originally envisaged in terms of rider positioning but I have a worry that on longer rides it may start to become irritating to my wrists and back.

So basically, which should I go for? If you don't think either would be suitable, what alternatives are there in the 600cc to 700cc category?

My max price is £5500.

TL;DR: Changing bikes. CBR600F or CBR650. Previous bikes ER6F and FZ6 S1. Concerned about comfort on long rides.

The 'CBR'650 is about the same as your ER6 I thought?

Remember there are lots of options to change ergonomics on most bikes.

Have Fazer. Presumably an FZ6 S2 as you upgraded from an ER6?

FZ6 S2 = 98 hp / 63.1 Nm / 180kg dry

2011 CBR600F (Hornet in a frock) = 100.6 bhp / 64 Nm / 198.0 kg wet

Barely anything in it. Presumably either bike will be as fast as you want to ride them anywhere other than the Autobahn or a "private road". Even an old FZS600 had more in it than my right hand wanted to find.

2014 (2011? wut?) CBR650 = 85.8 hp / 63 Nm / 212 kg wet

Is slower and lardier or not even any more peak torque.

When you say faster, do you mean speed, or acceleration?

Why 600 - 700? The obvious answer is Fireblade. Wink

Thanks for the responses.

I guess, for me it's more about the power delivery and acceleration. I'm looking for a step up from the FZ6, just as this was a step up (IMO) from an ER6F.

An early fireblade probably not actually much faster at all than the 600s!

I had a 2011 CBR600F, great bike and it's the bike I would say I learned to ride properly on and got rid of my chicken strips. I can't compare to a Fazer as I've never ridden one..

I think the CBR600F leans more forward than the hornet, that and the fairing is the only difference I think.

The CBR650F is less power, not sure why... although when I was trading up (at the time I wanted an 600RR) the salesman really tried to push the 650F, but I wanted more power!

Because it's got half the number of cylinders and will rev lower.

GSXR 750 would be a nice upgrade, as would a STriple.

Yeah but for £5500 you could probably find a high miles current gen 1000, worst case the previous found face 1000, all of which are rocket ship fast.

Er, no, it's an IL4 as well. I mean, I'm assuming that we are talking about the 2014 onwards CBR650F here, rather than some other letter-salad bike.

Honda have just neutered it. It's apparently got more low down torque than the 600, but nothing more at the peak. Thanks, Euro 4 and A2 compatibility.

I'm sure it's got plenty of performance for most riders in most situations on UK roads, but in the context of "wanna go fasta" it's a non-starta.

Oh wow, I could have sworn they'd released a 650 twin as a CB650f; but it seems it was just a four with the current regression of technology to slower and heavier - gained 50cc and lost power!

The FZ6 is as fast as any of the 600 sports bikes from the early 2000's. Mine was putting out 95hp at the wheel with some end cans and a PC3 and would keep up with most thing on track days that were just in road tune. (Now putting out over 100 at the wheel, but at the expensive of all mid range)

But the delivery is very 'top end' below 8k and you're wasting your time.

SO either ring it's neck more or trade it up for something that you'll notice the difference on more.

For example my dads FZ1 doesn't feel much 'faster' than my FZ6, but the way it delivers the power is much more suited to a road bike and it's a lovely bike to ride on the road. Have you considered one of these? It's basically an FZ6 with 50% more power. Or an FZ8..

Or try the MT09.

What I'm saying is the FZ6 is very capable, so be careful to not go 'down' in terms of performance and don't be scarred to go for something with a bigger engine, as if you think the FZ6 is slow, then you're not riding it properly.

This sums up my dilemma well. I'm looking for a faired bike and have some test rides on Friday.

I was just wondering what alternatives there were that I should not dismiss.

BTW: I may be the only person in the world that doesn't like the look of the stripple Shocked

Go to the yammy dealership and try a half faired FZ8, FZ1 and MT09 tracer.

All are bikes that allow you to make progress without having to scream the bollocks off it. Don't be scarred because it's a 1000 or whatever, they're only as fast as you let them go.

I'd have traded the FZ6 up for an FZ1 if my FZ6 wasn't in such a state that it's not worth anything now. I'd probably have kept the N as well just because it's lols. But the half faired FZ1 I've ridden a few times now is a really nice bike that you could happily do 300 miles on. Ideal tourer, with a punch in the mid range, but peak power pretty much on the rev limiter, so it pulls rather nicely at the top end and is still rewarding to 'thrash'. Plus the gears are ridiculously close together, which makes it even more fun - even in some respects more than the 600, as you can ride the mid range and change through twice as many gears and still make good progress.

I also quite fancy the MT09 because that looks ridiculous, gearing of a 600 but torque of a 1000, power wheelies in 3rd. Sounds lie my kind of bike.

Might go for one of these when the prices come down a bit, if the FZ6 prices are anything to go by in a couple of years I should be able to pick one up for £2500.

Ive got an MT-09 and love it. I don't have the skill/balls to thrash it to its potential yet. The low/mid range power is great, tonnes of acceleration from pretty much any gear at 2/3k revs and upwards.

Would be interested to hear what a more experienced rider has to say as i can only compare to the ER6n training bike.

Also, i got the official Yamaha remap done as the throttle response from closed was all or nothing. Its much smoother now. I've only used A mode once... and will be leaving that mode well alone until i'm a better rider.

I had a a 2011 CBR600F; lovely bike. Suspension and brakes were better than the low-ish price would suggest. Never really felt under-powered despite a lot of comparisons to the 600RR that were floating around at the time. Seems that it didn't suffer from the curse of poor quality that seems to have crept up on Hondas in the past few years - never had any issues with the finish on mine. Exhaust was bloody ugly though. And leaves, etc. got caught down at the bottom of the inside of the screen where you couldn't get them out unless you took it apart.
