Automatic gearboxes on buses normally.
7.5t class trucks are usually manual.
Very different beasts. I have driven both for a living.
Some people have grandfather rights to drive this class of truck on their car licence if they passed before 97 I think. ____________________ Currently enjoying products from Ford, Mazda and Yamaha

I have a pal who has driven an artic for the same firm for nearly 28 years.
If he works most weekends, and does as many second loads as he can, he will pull down 50k.
But he rarely sees his wife and works some really anti social hours to get that, 1am starts and that kind of thing. ____________________ Currently enjoying products from Ford, Mazda and Yamaha

All previous BCF threads on the subject, say poor driving gigs for newbies and experienced HGV drivers, long hours, crap contracts and working conditions, and the pay has been slashed by foreign drivers and immigrants doing most of it.
I can still see the merit in gaining HGV licencing for personal reasons or as a back up plan, or if your starting a business and need to transport stuff around, but as a deliberate career choice for a young person, what the hells in it for them today?? |
I'm 28, worked as a live events technician my whole life.
Wanted to become self employed, but wanted a back up job, HGV seemed to fit perfectly, lots of ad-hoc, all hours agency work.
Long story short, within 2 weeks of passing my class 2 license (rigid) I was turning away work. The higher money is generally with the hard work, multidrop, hand ball, long hour shifts.
I'm ok with it, as it's my backup job, so don't mind doing some hideous weeks, but not sure if I could do it full time. I get £12 an hour from an agency, and if I do 5 days, can hit 60-70 hours. ____________________ Currently Riding - 2002 Aprilia RSV1000 Mille |

How does that work with drivers hours do you get paid for your breaks and stuff ____________________ "The guy is a worthless cunt and I honestly believe I would be a slightly happier person if he died." - Chris-Red |

Edit:
Just tried to look it up but can't find anything on it so I guess that is bollocks. |
I`ve had both since 1986.

Which is probably fine if you're single or hate your wife and kids |
or you live in the south with an extortionate mortgage.

I don`t know of any employer that has paid meal breaks..
unless some one knows different
| andym wrote: | Being an ex-First driver, I can tell you now they are a shower of shite |
you can add stagecoach & go-ahead to that list aswell

i concur
| J4mes wrote: | To be honest if you can handle the size of a bus the putting yourself through the HGV probably wouldn't be that hard. Just as mentioned, the different gearbox arrangement might want a few hours practice and the different seating position giving a different view of the road.
You could probably whack it out with a days training! |
a bus is a lot more maneuverable than an HGV ... even a 12meter single deck Dennis SLF.
a coach is the same as a HGV.
the rules on auto/ manual have changed .. if you have a manual car licence then you will get a manual PSV regardless of what you take your test in..
iirc. its the same for HGV. ____________________ Whatever I post I have no citation and no intention of providing one..
