I need a set of starting rollers to fire up my bike and use a car battery to power them. what is the best way to keep this in decent condition? Optimiser, run down with a bulb and recharge or just put on the charger once a week?

No danger of using a deep cycle instead? You can get ones intended for solar trickle charging that would probably suit nicely.

Hi

Is it just a normal car battery? Or a deep cycle leisure battery?

Normal car batteries do not like being run down low, hence flattening it with a bulb would probably dramatically shorten its life

All the best

I would definitely just put it on the charger once a week. Any old charger should do the trick. I've gradually given up on trickle charging as I reckon that theses so called smart chargers probably kill at least one in five motorcycle batteries, and new, or newish, ones at that.

That's my rough estimate using my last 30(ish) bikes as evidence, and four different "name" chargers.

Normal car battery Katy, in fact I had to use the one off my car on Sunday as the dedicated battery had died on me. I will not flatten in but just draw a bit of juice off before recharging.

How many amps do you need? Could you just wire it to jump leads instead or will it need running away from the car/van

Tried it using jump leads but not enough umph to start the bike, so I had to pull the battery out of the car and hook it up to the starters. Not sure how many amps it pulls but the starter motor is huge from a truck.

Sure its not rated for 24V then? Might explain why its struggling at 12.

No it is 12v and does not struggle with a good connection rather than jump leads. I made them in 2011 and have had no trouble at all.

£40+ for a Ctek. Bullet proof fit and forget. Smile

Mibby more than £40+ Embarassed

^^^ Miles oot.

About £70 Smile

I would advise a maintenance charger as you will forget to charge or forget it's charging and have no week-end fun or burn the house down. Smile
