 Posted: 13:43 - 21 Jun 2016 Post subject: A1 licence, now what ? |
 |
|
Hi everyone, my ID stands for The Motorbike Bug , which I've well and truly caught.
I recently passed my A1 test and now riding with R plates on my wee 125.
I'd like to get my A licence too.
On the gov website, page five of this pdf https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/369984/routes-to-your-motorcycle-licence.pdf it says I do not need another CBT if I'm over 24 and have a full A1 licence, but a local instructor is insisting that I do need another CBT for the A licence.
Can anyone tell me for sure if I need another CBT before doing the Mod1 & Mod2 for the A licence? I'm over 24 and have a valid therory test.
Thanks in advance for any clarification you guys & girls can provide. |

Loads of things are, you chaps get the fuzzy end of the legislative lollypop.
I can think of absolutely no reason why passing A1 tests would either invalidate your existing CBT, nor why you'd need an in-period CBT at all if you've already got an A1 license.
Thing is, you don't have the DVSA or DVLA there, you've got an entirely different cower of shunts, the DVA.
Essentially, what they say goes. You could try emailing them at dva@infrastructure-ni.gov.uk and seeing if you can get any sense out of them.
The very best of luck to you. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I'd have thought you would, as AM only entitles you to 49cc automatic. Previous to the 3DLD rules (not sure if it's changed now) it was category B + CBT = AM entitlement forever. So I will have been able to ride a moped with no L plate for years before passing any A category tests, but still had to have a CBT.
| TMB wrote: | However, if a candidate has passed and A1 test and gained 2 years experience they will not require CBT for A2 or A (provided they meet the relevant age requirements) as they will have been able to gain one year’s post-test experience riding at speeds in excess of 45mph." |
2 years is the standard upgrade time. They wanted to rob me for another theory test when I upgraded from A2 to A because it had been less than two years. They didn't mention having a CBT though, which I would have needed if I'd not had A2 and just got straight in at 24+
We don't have the 45mph restriction, 125's are only restricted by power output of around 15bhp or the official metric equivalent. This means they should be good for around 75mph. Or 90mph, depending on who you talk to.

I'm a Driving Instructor, held car licence, HGV 1 etc etc for longer than I want to remember but only passed Bike test 3 weeks ago (Direct Access). So I'm now riding my Bandit 650 with Bloody R plates even though Im not restricted in any form at all. Pure stupidity on the part of DVLNI officials who make up the studpid rules. Plus had to make my own R plates as you cant buy them anywhere obvious for bikes. ____________________ Based in N.I. since 1987 |
