Hello,

I have changed the fork seals twice and they are still leaking. One more than the other.

Would anything other than the seals cause the forks to leak?

They are fine when I test them off the bike, but as soon as I get them on the bike and down the road they spit oil out of the top. It's instantly grey as well for some reason???

Did you also change the bushes?

What Itchy said. Worn bushes cause the sliders to run off true on the stanchions and that can cause seal failure.

Other causes are cheap pattern seals, pitting on the stanchion and not protecting the seal lip when fitting.

What condition are the stanchions in? How much rust? How pitted are they where they run across the seals?

And above that. If you're pushing a seal down over a rough stanchion it's not going to do it any favours. Wink

Hi all

Wow

Thank you for the quick responces, the stantions are mint, no pitting at all, no rust.

The bushes have seen better days, but they are discontinued now.

I have just been looking at some videos and manual diagrams and things aren't adding up.

Which way round should the seals go? And where should the washer go before or after the seal?

It looks like I have put them in the wrong way round, this time but I did the reverse last time as I have found two different versions!

I need this clarifying once and for all!!!

My bike is a Honda NSR 125 1991 Alcast

Washer goes between seal and bush - i.e. under the seal. Retaining clip goes above the seal. If it's a seal with a flat side and an open side then the flat side goes uppermost.

Looks like I have put the washers in the wrong way round this time then.

The seal has a bit of a concave, an open bit on one end and a concave bit on the other. Should the open bit face up?

The image is of the concave bit

Downloaded the Honda manual, that shows it one way, yet the online parts diagrams show it differently, Haynes don't sell the NSR manual, otherwise I would have bought one.

Right well I've got it the wrong way round now, but had it the correct way first time round and it still leaked.

slightly different design to my CBR600 but the two bushes (7/8 in the diagram) were worn and sliding over each other and the Teflon coating was being scraped off and contaminating the fork oil.
This lead to me curing 3 separate oil seals and partially losing my sanity until someone suggested it. Replaced them and not had a problem since.
Get them out, measure them up, am sure they will match another one from somewhere, or give david silver spares a call Smile
