Suzuki GN 125. Your thoughts.

I've had a look on MCN and a load of other reviews, but I just want someone who owns one to tell me that it's a good bike basically. I'm viewing one tomorrow, but I'm not sure about it just yet. I'm getting some money from the insurance company as my old bike was nicked and crashed. I've only got my CBT but I need a bike for getting back and forth from work and what not.

Is the suzuki GN 125 a decent commuter bike?

What do you like about it? And what sucks about it?

Also...does it have a fuel gauge?

I took my test on one. It's very fun to ride, although it gave me an ache in the small of my back after a couple of hours solid riding. However so did my XJ when I first got it and this has a very similar riding position and bars. No aches at all now I'm used it.

If you want to go any faster than 50mph you have to absolutely rag it in fourth gear then not let go of throttle when you change to fifth or it will just go back down to 50, although I guess most 125s will be similar.

The exhausts seem to get covered in rust but not actually rot through, which is a first for a Japanese bike. Has a side and centre stand, rev counter etc. Good on fuel .

It is a perfectly good bike but certainly nothing special so don't pay over the odds for it.

Is £800 for a used one (1 previous owner) 12,000 miles on the clock and in pretty good condition all right? It's got a good service history from what I've been told but I'll check that out. It sounds like what I need

It's a 2004 reg so it's not that old.

I get what you mean about the rust, as for CGs there are none nearby going for a fair rate, and this one is on my doorstep practically so it's more practical for me to get this

If the 125 is anything like the 250, it's a very bland bike. Never been a fan of the faux custom styling. I would go for an EN (or GS) every time. Having said that, I don't think there's any major problems with the GNs...they're just a bit uninspiring, especially if you're used to something Italian.

I've got the 250 now, only ridden it once though as I'm currently working on it.

I took my test on the 125 and to be honest found it a bit skittish, and definitely underpowered (as said above). It's OK though.

I have a GZ125 same engine as the GN and my dad had a GN which i used. I use my for work and it does the job. Roughly 200 miles on £10 of gas, not great for power but then if you were after that you'd by a 2 stroke but it still keeps up with traffic and abit of power for over taking sometimes, i take my down the motorway and it does fine just cant expect to be sat in the fast lane, will do 70mph flat out and i mean flat out screaming away on a fine day.
rust is an issue but then again thats a suziki for you and seen as i use it for work i dont give 2 s**ts about the looks of it. there is no fuel gauge but has a reverse tank which does the job, cheap to insure and service (1 oil filter bit of oil and a plug blow out the air filter and jobs a good en), rubber is really cheap got front and back for £100 fitted and that was a year ago and still loads of meat left on them.

i paid £600 for mine 2003 plate 8000 miles but i got a really good deal and haggeld on the price

I did CBT on a YBR125 which was ok.
I did a couple of days training on a GN125 and it was horrible.

I'd just like to back up what Kenny says about the engine.

I have a GZ125K9, it's very economical on fuel; £12 sees me doing 30/35 miles per day 5 days a week, plus about 6/10 on the weekend. Fill up again on the monday and I'm good for another week.

Okay I'm doing 40mph tops during the week for very short periods of time due to the roads being absolutley impossible to navigate at any decent speed, but my GZ has done 65mph downhill before.

Personally I'd get the 250 if you have the option, the 125 is massively underpowered. There wouldn't be much difference in the mpg.

Also the brakes suck something awful. I picked one up for my girlfriend when she was learning to ride. I shot straight through the first stop sign I came to after I hauled on the brakes and nothing much happened.

I must say I didn't like it, it felt underpowered (I don't need power but it felt sluggish...) and I didn't like the way I had to ride it...

I'm probably going to just try and get another Cagiva as I feel very comfortable on it, and it's a good fun bike to ride.

So back to looking for a cheap raptor or planet....

Heya, I ended up going with the Honda CG as that was my other choice. Couldn't find a cagiva planet going for around £500. ...Which isn't a surprise.

In any case I prefer the riding style and I'm more confident with it than I am with the GN 125.
