On the way home from work today I spotted a couple of yoofs in the centre of town riding a clearly just-stolen Street Triple. Helmetless, hoods up, scarfs on and riding pillion on a German registered bike. They crossed the lights in front of me and proceeded to jump the next couple of red lights out of town.

So off they went and I continued my merry cycle home, feeling suitably sorry for the poor sod that’s just lost their pride and joy and had their holiday to ‘beautiful Edinburgh’ wrecked. Cut to 10 minutes later and I spotted the scrawny shits at the back of a housing estate, ragging the arse out of the bike.

Figured I’d at least take the plate and call it into dibble so I moseyed on over, casual like, and took a couple of pics as they were trying to lever off the petrol cap with a screwdriver.

I wish I had the balls to confront them but wot with them having a screwdriver and me only having a novelty bicycle hooter to defend myself with I thought better of it.

Called it into dibble though so hopefully plod will keep an eye out for it and it may be reunited with its owner. Going on recovery rates to date I’m most certainly giving more credit to Edinburgh flatfoots than they deserve, but I’d want someone to do the same if it were my bike.

So what’s the general thoughts on confronting thieving, pikey shits in the act? Would you have confronted them? The temptation was there but I figured some stranger’s bike ain’t worth me getting chibbed (or worse) over.

I think you did the right thing. Unfortunately the police seem to assume the victim will get paid out by insurance so there's no loss and they need do nothing.

Depends on if I was driving a truck or an old car! It's often best to run them over several times severing the spine, skull and vital organs if your going to do it properly.

In reality id not put my own bike at risk of crashing being dropped or being vandalised or stolen, ad it's worth far more than 10x my life to me.

I intervene.

Over the last 5 years, I intervened in 3 'incidents' which I did not need to get involved with. In the first, the police arrived pretty swiftly but I'd already stopped the guy beating up his woman in the street. To give you an idea, he was 6'3, 20 stone and was quite happy to punch her in the face and push her in front of a car. All I wanted to do was eat my kebab.

The second was in a petrol station and the third was a brawl in a pub (4 people) that I stepped into in order to save the barman. I liked the guy so I thought it was only fair to help and I enjoy a punch up.

I walk into the middle and stop it if I believe it is the right thing to do, irrespective of the odds. If we all acted like that, criminals would fear us, but instead, there's a culture of fear that crims might hurt us. That is crazy.

You did the right thing, I'd only intervene if there was plenty of other witnesses about. It's just a pity you didn't manage any pictures of there faces.

I would say that you did the right thing, leave it too the authorities, not worth getting a screwdriver in the ribs for.

I can appreciate what gorillaonabike is saying, but in reality intervening in things like this has the tendency to escalate the situation rather than resolve it. A bloke beating on a woman is a different scenario entirely, and I think most people would step in on that, or I would like to think so.

Poor German bloke, he'll forever hate us now.

Most yobbos are pussycats if you confront them. They're all mouth sure, but if it gets physical or you even square up to them they usually scarper.

Ok, so lets say OP did intervene. Let's say he didn't get screwdrivered for his trouble. What is he going to do then? Ride two bikes to the nearest police station?

Better to stay back and call the rozzers. The neds being as blatant as this screwdrivering a bike's lock in broad daylight and riding with no lids mean they have little fear of the odd have a go hero.

Regarding Gorillaonabike's post, I was always taught NEVER to intevene in a domestic, no matter how one sided it looks. I've heard plenty of first hand stories from people who genuinely are tough, and people who think they are and often the assaulted party will turn on our have a go hero as well as the abuser. The police are best placed to deal with it, and are much more likely to attend than a report of a suspected stolen motorcycle ridden by a couple of neds.

Happened to me many years ago in Leeds. Shoved some geezer to the deck after he'd smashed his missus head into a nightclub's outside wall and set about trying to immobilise him. Next thing I know I've got the crazy bitch I'm trying to stop getting a pasting jumping on my back, bleeding all over me and shouting 'leave him alone!'.

Rozzers turned up 5 mins or so afterwards and I ended up in the back of a police car whilst they went off home together arm in arm, presumably to shag.

TBH I would not have intervened either, but its pretty hopeless when the police do nothing.

Poor bloke who lost the bike and he now has to figure out how to get home.

Perhaps there should be another number you can call which is answered by someone who is not the police and isn't interested in questioning them, mainly because they will have no answers that person is interested in hearing.

It is getting close to that point in Edinburgh now. I'm aware of a couple of cases now where scrotes have stolen the wrong bike from the wrong person and have lived to regret it.

If actions have real consequences, the theiving will stop. A week in hospital drinking their meals through a straw is probably the only way they'll think twice.

You mean "Outlaw"?

Also Michael Caine in "Harry Brown." Great film, but Christ it was a grim tale!

I would like to think it was quite hard to start a modern high-end bike unless you have also stolen the key - or have plenty of time to work on it.

I 100% agree. I knew a guy who had an issue and resolved it in a certain way. It certainly stops things quickly and that's one less criminal out there doing bad things to good people.

Don't think a bike is worth enough to the people who do that sort of thing. I knew a guy who does stuff and he wouldn't get out of bed for the money he'd make recovering a bike.

Besides, he's truly terrifying. I wouldn't want to ever do business with him because, well, * scared *
