Yes the fuck-wit that no longer talks BS in the pub is now 'on-line' but the number of them has quadrupled.
Similarly there were plenty whose complete knowledge of the world outside of their immediate environment was supplied by the Sun/Mirror/Express/Mail, and who only watched the news on TV for the football scores or to hear what's new with QE2s nice kids Ann, Charles, Andrew and little Edward. Generally they knew they weren't knowledgeable about world events, so they stayed quiet when certain subject where being discussed so as not to show themselves up.
But now they have news on numerous channels between the dumbed down reality TV, and internet access so they have a detailed knowledge of the whole world. They're very happy to join in most conversations, even after it's been explained to them that Laos is in Asia not Africa and maybe the story they told was about Lagos in Nigeria rather than in Vientiane in Laos that the conversation had actually been about.
The unfortunate effect of this newfound world knowledge is that they don't have time to get any common sense or to learn anything about their immediate environment anymore...
IMO! |
Sounds about right.
I think a good way of seeing it is in the Dunning-Kruger effect.
Only problem is that the bias seems to be slipping the wrong way. More people seem to over-inflate their sense of knowledge on a given topic, rather than the other way round. I fully admit to being part of the problem too, on many occasions no doubt. I've had plenty of furious google sessions to try and back up points I want to make in internet discussions |

I've only just started noticing "are" ... it doesn't quite do my head in as much as "he's" ... "The warden came and took he's dog away". They even think they have to put the apostrophe in! I think they think it shows how clever they are, that they know grammar .
The worst thing is ... they all accept it amongst one another's conversations. When I butt in and go "*our" or "*his", they don't appreciate it.
For my part, I only joined the "I was born in Fulham" one, as my daughter really was born and brought up there (me living there was only incidental but Anita grew up in the mean streets of SW6, so its her "manor") - even though she now lives abroad, so it's useful in that respect, old pix of the area, etc.
They do that infuriating "saying good morning and/or good night thing". First on the page every day gets to put up a sparkly good morning picture, complete with kittens or flowers. In the evening its like the frickin Waltons "Good night John Boy".
I've not yet bothered to find one for my local area, as I've been here for 8 years now and still only occasionally speak to my neighbours, and even then only for 5 minutes at a time if I can help it. (but now, of course, I am feeling a compulsion to go and search for one, FFS, LOL) ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

You've been duped by an antique. There's a reason why dictionaries are frequently updated, and even if the gibbering old crocks haven't caught up there's still what's called 'common useage'. To be amazed is not to be very surprised, it's to be "Cor, lumme, check THAT shit out!" As opposed to "fuck me, didn't see THAT shit coming!"

I opened the link expecting it to be something like 'The chuckle brother effect' (a spoof) but it made very good sense.
Most of us tend to get dragged into exaggerating on the internet.
I try not to but it definately happens to me and from what I can see, most others. ____________________ The above comment isn't necessarily the truth and anyone that says it is, is only correct if it's the truth or they're bigger than me. |

The absolute worst is when someone is thrown to the floor.
When there is a fabrication over the ground it can be called a 'floor'.
If there is no fabricated surface then it would be the ground, the road, the pavement etc.
A constructed floor made from mud, dung mixed with straw/grass/reeds would be a floor as it is a fabrication of sorts.
