As previously mentioned, there have always been some spectacularly stupid people but I do think the percentage of the population that are really dumb is increasing.

Yes the fuck-wit that no longer talks BS in the pub is now 'on-line' but the number of them has quadrupled.
Similarly there were plenty whose complete knowledge of the world outside of their immediate environment was supplied by the Sun/Mirror/Express/Mail, and who only watched the news on TV for the football scores or to hear what's new with QE2s nice kids Ann, Charles, Andrew and little Edward. Generally they knew they weren't knowledgeable about world events, so they stayed quiet when certain subject where being discussed so as not to show themselves up.

But now they have news on numerous channels between the dumbed down reality TV, and internet access so they have a detailed knowledge of the whole world. They're very happy to join in most conversations, even after it's been explained to them that Laos is in Asia not Africa and maybe the story they told was about Lagos in Nigeria rather than in Vientiane in Laos that the conversation had actually been about.

The unfortunate effect of this newfound world knowledge is that they don't have time to get any common sense or to learn anything about their immediate environment anymore... Rolling Eyes

IMO!

Sounds about right.

I think a good way of seeing it is in the Dunning-Kruger effect.

Only problem is that the bias seems to be slipping the wrong way. More people seem to over-inflate their sense of knowledge on a given topic, rather than the other way round. I fully admit to being part of the problem too, on many occasions no doubt. I've had plenty of furious google sessions to try and back up points I want to make in internet discussions Laughing

I've only just started noticing "are" ... it doesn't quite do my head in as much as "he's" ... "The warden came and took he's dog away". They even think they have to put the apostrophe in! I think they think it shows how clever they are, that they know grammar Rolling Eyes .

The worst thing is ... they all accept it amongst one another's conversations. When I butt in and go "*our" or "*his", they don't appreciate it.

For my part, I only joined the "I was born in Fulham" one, as my daughter really was born and brought up there (me living there was only incidental but Anita grew up in the mean streets of SW6, so its her "manor") - even though she now lives abroad, so it's useful in that respect, old pix of the area, etc.

They do that infuriating "saying good morning and/or good night thing". First on the page every day gets to put up a sparkly good morning picture, complete with kittens or flowers. Puke In the evening its like the frickin Waltons "Good night John Boy". Puke Puke

I've not yet bothered to find one for my local area, as I've been here for 8 years now and still only occasionally speak to my neighbours, and even then only for 5 minutes at a time if I can help it. (but now, of course, I am feeling a compulsion to go and search for one, FFS, LOL)

Take the time to watch the film or movie if you prefer "Idiocracy" and see where we are going.

According to this Collins English Dictionary which was printed in 1985, which predate google and probably even predates lord percy.

Amaze means surprise greatly, astound

Therefore percy's original analysis was incorrect

You've been duped by an antique. There's a reason why dictionaries are frequently updated, and even if the gibbering old crocks haven't caught up there's still what's called 'common useage'. To be amazed is not to be very surprised, it's to be "Cor, lumme, check THAT shit out!" As opposed to "fuck me, didn't see THAT shit coming!"

Any resources i look at has the definition as been greatly surprised.

As in

I am amazed jonny got a C in his test, when he only turned up to two classes.

Suprise:
Of a feeling, etc.: to come upon (a person) suddenly and forcibly. Of a person: to be seized, overtaken, affected violently with (also of) (a particular emotion or state). Freq. as past participle. Obs.

Amaze:
1. Loss of one's wits, mental stupefaction, craze. Obs.
2. Bewilderment, mental confusion. Obs
3. Extreme astonishment, wonder.

From the Oxford English Dictionary.

As has already been pointed out, you may be surprised that Johnny only turned up for two classes and amazed that he got a C, however you are unlikely to be amazed that he only turned up for two classes to receive a surprising C.
It is like comparing 'good' to 'great', you can always call a great thing good but a good thing may not always qualify as a great thing.

I opened the link expecting it to be something like 'The chuckle brother effect' (a spoof) but it made very good sense.

Most of us tend to get dragged into exaggerating on the internet.
I try not to but it definately happens to me and from what I can see, most others.

I've recently put some ads in the local Scumtree to flog off bits and bobs and the amount of enquires I had on matters I had taken time to describe clearly in the ad show how fucking thick many folk are

Is "English motherfucker! do you speak it?" still an acceptable response to these people or is it now raciss abyuice and frowned on?

The absolute worst is when someone is thrown to the floor.

When there is a fabrication over the ground it can be called a 'floor'.

If there is no fabricated surface then it would be the ground, the road, the pavement etc.

A constructed floor made from mud, dung mixed with straw/grass/reeds would be a floor as it is a fabrication of sorts.

My new neighbours (terrace house.... 😯) set fire to their house last week, then dealt with it by opening the window and not calling fire brigade, three teenage girls running hither and tither yelling at each other

Well this thread is a relief. I thought I was just living in Bedrock.
I follow a group on Facebook called "Morley Folk and Surrounding Areas" mostly because it's like a local Jeremy Kyle. Lots of arguments about Trish being a slag and about how dare people slag off our Trish and such.
Mostly people complaining about how others drive because don't you know that they had their 22 month old child in the car.
Oh, there's a bit from Cowboy Builders too, somebody recently paid a known dodgy joiner up front to have a decking put up in their garden and then posted in outrage when he bodged the job and did a runner halfway through.

I assume they were taking 'selfies' whilst running around.
It does seem that they take more notice/interest/concentration doing their 'selfie' than on the interesting/amazing/scary thing that they're taking the selfies with/of.

They could be watching the sunset off the west coast of india (one of the most amazing sights I've seen) but only see it in their selfies rather than with their own eyes.....

Are the roads round your way naturally occurring?
Surely if tarmac has been put down that makes them fabricated, and thus the road is the floor?

Most of the requests would be easier to find out using basic Google.

This. Lots of "WOTS THE BEST AND CHEAPEST" requests, as if quality and price are in no way proportional.

People who seem to think that the amount they have or want to spend on something is what it should cost. "LOOKIN 4 ZAFIRA UNDER 20K MILES MUST HAVE FULL MOT N SATNAV UNDER £1000 THX)"
