Sorry, I reallize there is info on this around but I've confused myself a little.
I'm 17 on a varadero. I've only been on it a month but would like to get rid of the L plates. I originally thought that just the mod 1 had to be done but now, am I right in thinking, that I need both mod 1 and mod 2 (aswell as theory of course). Also if so and I pass these, can I then roll on to a 35kw bike at 19 without further tests?
Also can you just book these tests without courses and how tricky is it to train yourself.
Thanks

Yes.

No.

You'll need to pass both modules again, this time on a 395cc+, 20kw - 35kW bike.

And again when you want a full A license, on a 595cc+ 50kW+ bike, either 2 years after you pass A2, or if you skip A2, then when you reach 24.

Yes, it's a ball ache. Sad

Yes.

How awesome are you? The D(V)SA have some pretty decent videos on YouTube that cover most of it:

Mod 1 in particular only costs £15.50 - you might as well have a go.

Thanks, covered everything nicely,
so at each step up mod 1 and mod2 have to be redone. Are they identical, just on larger bikes? Also I assume you don't have to redo the theory.
How much do both cost about? Is it worth doing it with a 125?

Each module is exactly the same, the only difference is the power of the machine. The theory test in your case would not need done again. At 17 years old you do the theory, pass A1 test on the 125. At 19 you can then do your A2 on a big bike. At 21 you can then do the A.

Al the hoops.

If you do the a1 licence now, in 2 years you can go for a2 without needing a theory test. That, and being able to use motorways, removing L plates and carrying a pillion are the benefits of passing the test. If you've done the theory, then why not give it a go as Rogerborg said.

Duplicated Thumbs Up oops, but it's not at 19 you can go a2 without redoing theory, it's 2 years from mod2 pass on A1. Then A would be 2 years from A2 pass.

The test format is the same, the extra tests are just a scam dressed up as a safety exercise. At the speeds and rates of acceleration used on mod 1&2 I personally think the heavier more stable 'big' bike makes passing easier. The only way additional testing would ensure people are safer when they make the jump would be if the candidate could display that they can use the extra oomph safely. But then you're talking about hard acceleration, high speed cornering etc etc. Which they won't do for obvious reasons (unless they converted a race track or had something purpose built; but there's so few bikers I doubt that cost would ever get justified).

Sorry dude, the system sucks. That said, to get a car with anywhere near the fun potential of most bikes you'd have to spend a fair amount. Put into context the 2 or 3 lots of tests plus a reasonably priced bike will still be cheaper than say, a German hot hatch.

Good luck sir!
