but I am wondering if I should ask gasket change too or not.
I read somewhere that changing gasket sometimes worsen oil leak.
|
????
Clearly it leaking past the gasket. So how would not changing it make it better?
Maybe cleaning the surfaces and reseating may help. But for the cost of a new gasket, is it worth the risk of it having to go back to be replaced again if it still leaks afterwards. |
Thanks iooi, I will ask gasket change too. I couldn't tell how not good this was.
I'm thinking of driving this car till 125k miles, so added cost is negligible
Maybe what I read was the case done by dodgy method, I think genuine Toyota dealer will do it properly.
Total MOT fee estimation will be from £1500 to £1700.

If the oil is dripping under the car, it won't pass. If not dripping, it will pass by cleaning the engine surface. ____________________ own:2020 Serow 250

I'm not sure that it's strict, it's just very expensive, which is why Japs export used cars so vigorously. |
I think UK MOT seems to be stricter than ours. And ours is expensive £450 (out of £1700) is tax and liability insurance(=fixed cost for 2500cc/1.6ton car). £550 is parts cost, £700 is labour and inspection fee. ____________________ own:2020 Serow 250

I personally wouldn't bother changing the gasket at all. It's a very slight misting of oil when all is said and done. If it got more severe I might think about it. There is WAY more oil on and around the engine block of my work van and I don't give it a second thought.
There again, I don't much care about cars anyway. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
I did the 2010 Round Britain Rally on my 350 Bullet. 89 landmarks, 3 months, 9,500 miles. |

Thanks stinkwheel, this time I decided to ask gasket too, went to the dealer and asked them to change gasket which I canceled on the phone without watching the engine yesterday.
At first I thought I may postpone gasket change till around 85k miles, but decided to do it earlier this time, cause I'm aiming to drive this car till around 125k miles which is double of present 59k miles.

Over here the dealer rates are usually over double the price on independent garages. |
I once asked independent garage doing MOT but they couldn't fix spongy brake pedal after fluid change even after 2 time retries. So I had to bring my car to Toyota dealer just after that to fix spongy brake. I had to pay nearly double.
Later I found why they couldn't fix it. Toyota Brevis has EBD(Electronic Brake Force Distribution) and need scan tool to cancel solenoid valve and change brake fluid properly. I think they didn't have scan tool. I decided not to bring my car to independent garage anymore after that. And they are not so cheap(maybe 80% of dealer here). Maybe the garage I brought my car was the worst one, there may be better independent garage somewhere, but I lost confidence in them. ____________________ own:2020 Serow 250
