Sounds a bit annoying.

Will you be getting a second account or waiting until it happens again in the future?

In seriousness though, two accounts is a lifesaver.

A few years back when NatWest went down I enjoyed loan sharking to those with no ability to access money.

It takes about five minutes to open a new account and you might be able to swing an offer. 100 quid free a few years back from the majors.

So the rep put the wrong amount in the keypad and you didn't check the amount carefully enough. Both at fault there. That's why they say "Check the amount and enter your PIN." I hardly think they were trying to pull a fast one; very few people will not notice 5k missing from their account.

Missing money aside, the repercussions from this sound pretty rough. Must be hard to see the mistrust in your family's eyes, and I've known the embarrassment of having to borrow cash off parents. However, and not trying to sound harsh here, but your history and previous situation aren't Metropolis' fault...

Anyway, a week to sort sounds like an excessive amount of time given the amount involved. Refunds are pretty instantaneous are they not? Have you opened a dialogue with your bank manager? It's possible that they could cancel the transaction or at least waive the fees.
Start badgering Metropolis and ask for specifics re. refund. Print off a bank statement as evidence for them. If you're not getting the answers you want then go higher up the food chain and don't stop until you get some resolution. Chances are that to them, it's an erroneous transaction, whereas to you, it's a life changing situation.
Personally, I wouldn't try to get the car garage involved. It'll only serve to muddy the waters. Keep it simple.
Be open and frank with your wife and family. Everyone makes mistakes and this one is pretty innocent (albeit involving a large sum of money). No-one should be judging you too harshly for this.

Get it sorted out, chill your family out, then go buy your bike and enjoy riding it (and check amounts before committing).

Good Luck Thumbs Up

Not a chargeback through the bank?

I can see you've spoken to the back regarding the £500 deposit that's been taken in addition instead of refunded, have you spoken to them about the entire amount?

Speaking to your bank directly (go in if you can) and saying simply what has happened:

salesman was holding chip and pin machine, I checked and believed it said £500, after typing pin realised it said £5000
Too late to stop the transaction and a refund processed but it's not turned up. Decided due to overdraft fees I can't go ahead with the purchase now and asked for deposit returned and they've charged £500 extra

Is it possible to reverse the transaction? Discussions with the dealership have broken down, they refuse to see that an error has been made.

The above should do it, it worked for me when 3 started billing me for a contract I didn't have.

They've been very good to you it seems to me. It's exactly why you check the amount before putting in your pin. Every time.

On card machines you tend to enter all of the digits including pennies, so entering 6 zeros instead of 5 isn't all that difficult.

When I worked in retail I on more than once occasion made similar mistakes (when you do upward of 1000 transactions in a year these things happen), though admittedly never that high value. I very much doubt the company I worked for would have offered to pay costs to somebody.

In addition to, but the bank's not at fault.

^ This. However Metropolis have lost a sale over their mistake, and the second charge sounds strange. I'd be claiming for all the monies lost.

What type of card/account is it that you and the UberFrau have for the account that you claim to have used?

Depends on the original payment method, but with cards/banks 3-4 working days is pretty common to be honest with you, especially with £4.5k. All of that said. They could have given you a bit of cash to tide you over and taken it out of your refund. If this is even true, which I'm still 50/50 on (I'd love to see Metropolis' side given they know about it).

Paypal is pretty much instant IIRC.

As an aside, it is an easy mistake to make. I always double check my card payments before clicking the button and read it back to people too.

Similar mistake when it came to fuelling up before where they got the order of magnitude wrong - £50 became £500. Again, always double check. It's a very very hard and unfortunate lesson to learn, considering your previous positive experience with the chain.

I always make sure when large sums are leaving my account, to trace my hands over the exact amount. Same goes to online bank transfers. One slip of the keypad could mean you're sending several thousands to some other chap instead of your old man.

Tis also why I generally tend to use credit cards for large purchases too. know you do get stung 3% for purchasing vehicles with a card, so there is that issue to consider too.

Hope it resolves itself without further grief.
