I don't usually pay too much attention to all the temps on my machine. The other day I was playing GTA V for about 4 hours and when I shut the game, I got a blue screen briefly before it rebooted itself.

In the BIOS I got a "CPU Temperature warning" or something to that effect. I'd never seen that before so went in to the BIOS and looked at the temps and they were 65 degrees, which isn't bad. I booted in to Windows and everything was fine.

Not had any issues since but I have been running HWmonitor and keeping an eye on it.

Is this "normal" ?

This machine has:-

i7 3770k no OC
Corsair H60 water cooler
ASUS Sabertooth Z77 mobo

Rest doesn't matter so much as it's the CPU temps which I'm wondering whether there's a problem here.

I've had this board and CPU for about 5 years now, to my knowledge, never changed the thermal paste in there as far as I can remember.

Oh and HWmonitor stats below are from having the PC on for the past 5 hours, no heavy lifting, just web browsing.

Read what Intel has got to say about your CPU: https://ark.intel.com/products/65523/Intel-Core-i7-3770K-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-3_90-GHz

Max temp. at processor integrated heat spreader - 67.4°C

''Corsair H60 water cooler + 5 years old '' - Does it even work? Can you check the pump is working?

They look high to me. Idle none load should be circa +20oC over ambient. Those temps look like full load kind of region.

How would I know if the pump is working?

Maybe time for a new cooler as even if it is working 70 degrees under no real load is a bit high.

Any recommendations on a good cooler?

A bit Confused I use a Cooler Master cooler. Why water-cooled if you're not OC?

I have an Antec Khuler h20 920 with silent fans.

It is near silent.

I run a cheap GELID Solutions Tranquillo cooler (£15) and I can't hear it even when at load. Idle at 38°C, Q6600 (105W TDP), max of 55°C at full load. The 120x120 fan on the cooler does only 1200rpm at max speed. The air flow consists of one fan sucking air in at the front and one exhaust fan back with the PSU having its own fan. All fans are 120x120, very low speed.

I'd say your liquid cooling system is not working or the computer case is full of dust. Either way, I'd change the liquid cooling for a classic heatpipes and a fan.

Your i7 3770k being 77W TDP, the Tranquillo or any similar solution, should work more than just fine.

This kind of thing:

Sounds like the cooler isn't working properly. Though 67c seems bloody low as a max temp on Intel ARK.

I've had my 5820K over 80 without issues (blatting all cores on mprime with the fan turned down as a test).

And the laptop basically runs 85-90 on the standard whilst gaming. Shortening its' life for sure, but no issues yet 5 years in. (granted it's 30ish at idle). I believe laptop CPU's are rated higher, but I don't understand why they would be physically more durable.

As others have suggested, 20 quid or so will get you a cooler with a big fan that will be virtually silent. I could hear my HDDs over the sound of my previous cooler (Arctic Freezer of some description).

Before you start wasting money on stuff you probably don't need, consider pulling the H60 out, cleaning the radiator and completely cleaning the contact plate on the pump off then reapplying it with a very small grain of rice sized blob of high end thermal paste.

Also take this as an opportunity to clean out any dust that might be obstructing the case fans and air intakes as well.

When was the last time you cleaned the rad?

compressed air should do the trick.

It's not worth spending time trying to clean or fix a Corsair watercooler. Wink

Turns out.... dust & thermal paste fixed it.

I cleaned my entire case out, took it to bits, de-dusted it and re-applied thermal paste after cleaning the old off.

Pc now running sub 30 degrees whilst under no real load, just web browsing and I played GTA V for 3 hours last night and the highest temp I saw was 63 degrees.

Compare that to a few night ago and I logged off when I saw it hit 96 degrees playing GTA.

I was under stating how bad I had actually let the dust situation get, the radiator was clogged up, the 120mm fan on the other side of it was clogged up and inbetween the case / fan was clogged too.

Thermal paste was dried on rock hard in places so not doing its job.

But it's still working fine 5 years on. It was just dust clogged in the rad and fans and some thermal paste. Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones that it's still working after all this time.
