https://baristahustle.com/for-a-good-puck/

I'm using a Delongi espresso machine. Not getting max satisfaction from it as I can't get my 18g of grounds in then two cup basket.

And my puck is often sloppy.

Any advice

Pack it in tighter.
Looser coffee makes it sloppy.

If you aren't getting the hit you want from the coffee, then try a different one. Lidl and Aldi both sell ok coffee, if you can find it Percol Black and Beyond espresso is a decent hit.

This is more a double-entendre challenge than a barista question, but I'll resist (for once).

We have a similar machine (but ours is a bean-to-cup one) and don't have any problems. All the adjustments on ours are set to max. So, max grind, max strength, max quantity, max temp.

So my advice is turn everything up to the max, Spinal Tap style. Does it have an 11 setting?

Having used Tracey's bean grinder for a while, ooh err missus! Laughing

We bought a new, Bosch, filter machine when we were in Cyprus, the coffee from the filter machine has loads more flavour than that from bean to cup machine. The filter machine also has an added bonus in that you can just keep adding more coffee into the mix until you find the right flavour/caffeine level!

If you can't get the suggsted amount of grounds in the basket, and the resulting puck is sloppy and not full flavour, mustbe thatyou are not grinding finely enough?

Once its finely enough grounden, you should be able to force all the cofdfee in there and pack it enough so as not to allow water to make it gooshy.

Good answers.
I over research this shit too.
Wet puck depends on a few major variables.
The size of grind.
The opening/s in the cup.
The pack/tamp.

I buy very specific coffees from coffee experts so I can predict flavour, strength etc.

I have adjusted the grind away from espresso fine towards filter medium.
This reduces exposure so reduces strength but results in a dry puck.

I want to try to get a bigger hole in the cup but not lose grounds.
The cup hole is designed to spray coffee for a crema effect. That will be lost

I use a Delonghi Scultura coffee machine, using the included double pod, I finely grind 12g of beans and give it a good tamp down.

It comes out perfect everytime. I was under the impression a single was 7g and a double was 10g? Or have I been misinformed? 18g seems a hell of a lot assuming your pod sizes are the same as mine...

I order online, they roast on the day (or next if ordered in the afternoon)
Then it is posted to your address (My address, if I order it Smile ).

You will love this shit if you like 'good' coffee.
But it ruins your 'pallette for' the stuff they spew into your cup in 'Coffee Shop' Chains. Smile

He even rushed me a special order out just before Christmas one year. I think he roasted and posted himself as the staff were offski.

I just cram the coffee in, pre-heat the mug with boiling water empty it and put underneath, add milk and top with hot water.

I basically have an Americano which is a double-double espresso Shocked

Since starting the thread I worked out a solution (No Pun).
I pulled the basket out my old esspresso maker and popped it (Read rammed/clashed) it into my new de-lonhgi Cup.
Bingo..... the bigger and deeper basket, without the 'special' 'pin-hole' crema spray device, has returned my coffee to better strength and pucks are now drier.

I am dialing down the size of grind now. Smile

Don't keep using the same bean/coffee type swap them out. We have a bean to cup but never put the same bean type in twice in a row, we just put something different in.

Yes, I buy two or three single beans then I can play at blending.
My 'Drug Dealer' scales are for that.

I have a Russell Hobbs espresso machine, it works.
I get my coffee from a small, independent local coffee supplier, they roast, blend and grind their own coffees.
Their Italian Full Strength is just how we like a coffee.
They cost less than the supermarkets.
The puck is not sloppy.

If in need of real hit try an Aeropress!

Alternatively, you could quit pucking around and try spooning instead. Nescafe straight from the tin never sticks (assuming you maintain a dry spoon). Laughing

Which reminds me, I haven't had an instant coffee for more than a year now, these Muricans don't use the muck. Smile
