when does this stop?
last time i did my shoulder it felt 100% in less than a week |
Common sense mate. You need the swelling to go down (restricted movement is because the muscles have gone into spasm to protect the joint, around which the ligaments are ripped), and when it does, you can begin a physio course. This can take a long time. If your shoulder felt 100% in less than a week before, that means you just pulled a muscle. This time you have a dislocated shoulder, a tendon is torn and your shoulder is hanging from the wrong place.
What you need to do:
1) Take ibuprofen (don't exceed maximum daily dose). Other painkillers won't do, because ibuprofen has anti-inflammatory properties that they don't.
2) Return to A&E. Complain of serious shoulder pain. Wait for a day in that waiting room if need be. Sorry. Then, when you're seen, make sure they note the range of movement and take X-rays. You need BOTH these things. They will then diagnose a dislocated shoulder and send you back with a referral.
Want to do it the hard way? Just wait it out. When swelling goes down, make daily visits to the swimming pool, until you can swim. This will take much longer. You really need a proper diagnosis. You will need to insist and make sure you're not fobbed off.
FYI this has happened to me before. I've been sent home with a dislocated shoulder from A&E after being told to take painkillers and wait it out, then been to see the doctor as the pain didn't subside, then been back to A&E where they properly diagnosed a dislocated shoulder. About 8 weeks wasted, for nothing. ____________________ Safety in numbers |

Got to sign off as I'm tired, but if you need something to take your mind off it, take an elastic band and cut it so you have a single length of elastic. Then glue it back together. Then pull it apart before it dries.
This teaches us 2 things:
1) The more you overlap the two ends, the more glue you can put on to stick them together.
2) You need to leave more time for the glue to harden or dry.
It's the same with human tissues like ligaments. They form scar tissue, which is like glue, or a weld. That's why, when you dislocate a shoulder, you put it in a sling. It's also why your body reacts to the dislocation by putting the muscles into spasm, locking up their range of motion.
Meanwhile, you still need to use that arm, so relieving that spasm a little, just enough to keep the muscles around the injured joint moving, is necessary. A physiotherapist would give you exercises with limited ranges of motion: isometric and isotonic movements with an elastic band or fixed objects. These will make you recover much faster than leaving it alone.
Nice of me to type all this, I know. You're welcome. Now it's up to you what you decide to do. ____________________ Safety in numbers |
