What're some affordable cars where comfort is a major feature? Thinking used here - let's say ideally a couple grand, so yeah, cheap ass. Also, and this is a bit more difficult, ideally not gas guzzling mofos.

I'm talking about cars that have roomy, soft seats - and smooth, quiet motors. It's easy to drive them and get that riding-on-air vibe. WOULD PREFER MANUAL, NB.

I have no experience of these sorts of motors at all - apart from the mother in law used to have a volvo, w/ yr heated seats, automatic box and that "big car" feel. It was pretty sweet tbh. She got it for £300 (albeit w/ mega miles - but it showed no sign of giving up, and body work was still really sound).

Maybe some sort of lexus? I don't want gadgets as such, though. I don't use 'em, and it's just more shit to go wrong. So simple is best imo. I'm therefore thinking probably euro rather than jap?

You sound like you need a bmw 750 or similar, but they will be neither frugal nor particularly cheap.

I have seen them on ebay for 6-7 grand

Heres a 740 for 6k looks comfy

Hmmm, you failed to mention the non-bourgeois criterion in your OP, so I changed my google search to "cars for the proletariat" and came up with Moskvitch.

After years of vans I've 'downgraded' to a car.
I wanted something roomy yet practical to throw my shit in
but had a similar limited budget to you
I considered an old merc/beemer etc but played it safe and got low mileage (86K) 1.9 tdi 2005 Galaxy 6 speed manual

Its a bit boring I'll admit but on a run from here in Bristol to Middlesbrough and back got 51mpg, twice as many mpgs as my previous bus and its faster, quieter and smoother too
Plus working aircon for the 3 days a year when its hot and stuffy.

In the midlands I picked up a scooter for one of my lads and it went in easily as I'd removed seats 6 and 7 at the back.
All the rear seats can easily be removed BTW which appealed to my vanner mentality.

I'd suggest something common as muck like this as a cheap merc bmw could easily be at the wanty and needy stage and therefore soon get depressingly expensive

They're not spacious in the back, but otherwise yes, they feel like they're hewn from solid. "Wafting" springs to mind, and who doesn't like black-on-cream dials. The only thing is, you have to refer to the wheel as the "helm".

Knocking on a bit now though, you'll be lucky to still find a good 'un.

Aircon works wonders this time of year too, de fogs the front screen pretty quick on my E46 touring, one of these in 320D flavour will be nice if it's not been abused and will certainly be better on go juice than my 2.5 petrol, she's not a cheap date, if you want petrol get the 3.0 for equal mpg with +39bhp/40Lb:Ft.

Comfiest car I have ever owned is my current one, a fugly Multipla. Friends with bad backs etc say similar. Nice and flexible, being able to remove the back seats and goes very nicely even though its not frual... the diesel one will reportedly do over 60mpg on a run and produces around 115bhp

Quite, its always on in my car as part of its climate control system whether hot or cold setting.

Comfortable, yet cheap? Something French, perhaps. Anything the PSA and Renault make is comfy and soft. Too soft, if you asked me. Old cars, new cars, they are all the same, a couch on wheels. Thumbs Up

Late model Mazda 323F?

Only issues are even though it's a hatchback it feels a lot like an estate car. Plenty of space and decent running costs.

For cheap, relatively frugal, drives itself comfort, my first thought was a W210 E class Merc, preferably a 320 turbo diesel - you won't find a manual though, but that's no problem as the auto box is fairly bomb proof.

If you think a big old Volvo fits the bill, manual 740/940s aren't uncommon, but they aren't what I would describe as economical.

One of my lad just got rid of his 2001 merc E320 estate
Lovely big engine but the rest wasn;t aging well and the bills were
getting too regular ( see wanty needy above)

We ( I ) serviced quite a few things on the the E320 quite easily but some had to be done by a garage and costs rose.
I diagnosed a faulty Crank position sensor and bought one but
we couldn't get old one out and even the garage struggled and had to drop the motor to do it.
So a 20-30 quid part cost ££££s to fit
Injectors wouldn't budge when one was leaking, back to garage
more ££££s
Brake/suspension leak,garage, £££s
Aircon fix ££££s

Sub 2K money usually means 10+ years for bigger/classier vehicles
and while we all want sexy fun cars, if money's an issue, best consider things carefully.

Various older versions of the Skoda superb. From the owners forum people seem to love them for comfort etc. 2l diesel are just VAG units - kinda a bigger Passat.

Currently I am rocking around in a brand new '66 plate superb and loving the comfort factor next to my BMW 325i.

For the ride comfort, any Citroen with the pneumatic suspension.

Otherwise, my E39 BMW 530 is going to be up for sale as soon as the DVLA sort the registration on my new car. Not fuel efficient at all, but you'd have about £1250 change from 2 grand to buy extra petrol Wink
