Has anyone ever successfully used one of those ''pour into the cooling system'' sealants?

I have a small leak in my car's cooling system and it's too cold for me to work on it at the moment. The radiator has a wet spot on it, so I think a small stone or previous owner damaged the radiator and as it gets colded outside, the leak got present/noticeable. I already cleaned the whole engine to deremin, where the leak is comming from and I'm 99.9% sure it's the radiator.

Q: I have here a Sonax cooling system sealant, that you pour into the coolant (into the expansion tank, in my case), so...
1) Will this feck up the engine?
2) Will it just do nothing?
3) Will it work?

Yes. I poured in whatever my local petrol station was selling, and it sealed a leak in my Citroen radiator without causing any problems until I scrapped it a few years later for being a Citroen.

Well, poured it in. I had to take the hose from the head to the radiator off and pour it there, as they say it's supposed to go directly into the radiator. Had a hour drive in the car, now we'll wait. For obivous reason, when the engine is hot, there's no leak. It's the cooling down, that opens the little cracks. Thumbs Up

Thanks Roger,

Even cracking a raw egg into the radiator works. Seen it done.

I thought the egg into the radiator was just a urban myth. Thinking

Read above, already done.

Also, the manual said specifically to turn the heater on, as it seals the heater core as well. Let's hope I did not feck up the engine. Thumbs Up

Tbh if a manufacturer of expensive performance engines is using a plastic water pump impeller and pump body housing too, they are simply not worth buying their products, as you'd have to think what other engine and ancillary parts are they scrimping on?

I used K-seal as a very short term temporary part fix on a Rover K-series engine once. But it has very mixed reputation and results, and is probably better suited as a gasket and leak sealant on a simpler dimensionally stable engine that has fewer potential ways of failure.

And so far, it still leaks. Thumbs Down

A new radiator it is, then.

If you're resorting to a new rad, try the egg trick. It's scrap anyway, to you so run the experiment. Pleeeasseeee.

Yes Doctor, but wouldn't the egg mess up the whole cooling system as well as the radiator? All the hoses, lines, the head, cylinders, coolant pump...? Smile

A new cheap rad from your local factors, maybe two hoses if they look perished, and an hours work on the drive will have the job done.

You love old Merc's so it would be silly to kill one seeing as they generally go on forever with the occasional service. Sadly they still can't cool the engine without water, I'm not sure any manufacturer has perfected this feat either.

Good job you ain't got a K-series in your benz, lose a pint:lose an engine is a fair and accurate motto for these.

Nah the hot water in the rad will instacook the egg and it won't be anything that you couldn't flush out of the system anyway.

I thought it was obvious we were talking about modern car engines though? I didn't explicitly specify though so the twat hat is on me if that makes you feel a little bit better inside? Wink
