Hello,

Does anyone know whether I can get some sort of switchable restrictor? I can't seem to find any on google, but a few websites mentioned some manufacturers make them.

Reason is I want to ride legit on the road, but I am planning on doing some trackdays etc. so would really hate to be restricted then...

Has anyone done this? Preferably something near the front bike, tucked away, so can be done quickly.

Bike is a kawa er6n 2013 (new shape) if that helps.

Ask yourself the following question:

Why would a legit restrictor vendor risk providing something switchable which can be proven to have a use of flouting the law? And why would someone less-than-legit bother with restriction at all?

Most restrictors are the physical type which require adjustments to the fuelling to match, so switching would probably screw up the fuelling. The other restriction option is changing the ECU mapping itself, which isn't going to be switchable on a factory unit for the reasons above.

It's certainly possible to do, but I doubt anyone has.

Modern FI bikes might be restricted by the ECU, switching the restricted ECU to full power ECU usually takes a matter of minutes under the seat.

Is your ER6 restricted with ECU or mechanically?

I know some mechanics, and I know loads of riders so getting someone to do it wouldn't be the issue, I am asking for ideas as initially it would probably be hard to get them to do it as they wouldn't get such requests often, why would it not be legit? Is there any law on the type of restrictors that can be used?

From my understanding so long as I'm producing 47bhp on the road nobody can bother me, the fact that I can easily take that off is none of their concern surely?

Hard to say how it's done since I can redline, but at top end it just dies, so not sure whether I can't pull all the way back or whether it's made to be like that by ECU - I can buy another restrictor that's not an issue though, I'll look at this as it will probably be my option - however ideally I'd get something instant.

Do you reckon the 'minutes under the seat' could be turned into a switch? :s

Test centre bikes have the facility to switch between, don't they?
So such devices must exist...

They do? That's brilliant if they do, ideally it's something that I can do really quickly, like click, 47, click full bhp... so then if I go out into the mountains somewhere I can... you know... Smile.

I did my test on a CB500 and it was at 33bhp even I think.

The ER6 is restricted by a physical throttle stop and a simple shorting plug. You need to remove the thingamajiggy and the plug. Couple of minutes.

So what happens if I just have a simple throttle restrictor screw instead that I could potentially flick up and down or something?

Wouldn't that make it 40 something? That would be fast as hell, literally just flick up and down?

Probably nothing happens, same as if you ride it completely unrestricted all the time.

You've got the information on how to do it right. If your goal is really track-days then it should be no problem at all for you to take a couple of minutes to de- and re-restrict it that way.

What you're really on about is riding unrestricted on the road, then flipping the Secret Switch when you're tugged, and that'll be Constable McGrumpy just flummoxed.

The chances of being stopped are minimal, and a piece of paper will end most conversations. No need to over-complicate it. If you really must come up with a Cunning Plan, I'd suggest that you should not paint a random screw on the throttle body yellow, and fit a harness plug with a dummy shorting wire.

It's a screw, just unscrew it.

Back in the good olde 33hp days we just didn't bother restricting them and the police never bothered learning the laws.

Simpler times back then.

I'd want to ride unrestricted, and I want to have a cunning plan just because, I know plenty of riders who are unrestricted, they've never been pulled... but I want to be prepared since there have been horror stories.

Can you elaborate on that last point I don't really understand, I'm not too mechanical but with a decent explanation to go on I would be able to do some research.

Well I'm sure a copper can be aware of how it is in legal terms and how much it proves.

I thought you needed a full A to get on a track anyway.

Also assuming that is really why you want a switch to make it A2 legal then not which it isn't. I wouldn't because I know as well as you that once you've got a taste for the full power that switch will be 'off' right up until you get pulled for whatever reason.

Which is why I want something quick, some sort of a weird screw is the best way that I've seen so far... if I can get a weird little screw that can block/notblock really quickly I'm sorted and it won't even matter.

I'd check to see what, if any trackdays you can do.

I've only done Oulton Park, but they have always stipulated unrestricted license, or ACU holders only. NO restricted license holders were permitted.

Spoke to a few riders, some of which A2, they confirmed I can, regardless, there's "other" reasons I want a quickly switchable restrictor if I'm honest... when I'm out in the middle of france or lake district I want to be able to thrash it, but I'm a paranoid person... so I really won't be comfortable with doing it unless I can restrict it within seconds.

As above, on the ER6 it's two things, a thing that plugs into the diag port (supposed to dull the torque), then the torx screw goes into a hole on the throttle linkage. On an ER6-N I could remove and re-insert literally in seconds.

On my ER6F it took a little longer as I had to loosen the fairing a tad and then get in. But I could do it in 5-10.

Note the restrictor, as far as I know, has been in the same place which limits throttle to about 30% 'ish. This was the restrictor on the 33BHP, I would be surprised if they have changed the location on yours to allow it to meet the higher 'allowance' as yours is a '13 model and we didn't really have A2 when that bike was in production as it is now. So it may still be around 33BHP mark!

I did 111mph the other day on errr..... private land and stuff... yeah, doubt a 180+kg with a 90kg rider on 33bhp could do that. I think the certificate also says 35kw (from kawa)

Anyways, I'm assuming the plug is irrelevant and I just take that out, and then readding the screw is the only thing I need to do for the officer?

I will look into that, maybe the screw will just always be at hand and then I plug it in cheekily as I'm pulling up, is that doable?? I will need to see where mine is, I may need to remove/modify a plastic to make sure it is easily accessible... I want to be able to do it while on the bike.
