I've done Machine control 1, 2 and 3 - Found them all very useful. Tom is a skilled rider to say the least. I've never ever seen someone stomp on a rear brake like that, still keeping the bike perfectly straight.

Learned a lot of good stuff, fundamentally, the thing that ruins a bike and its capabilities is the rider. MC 1 is really good for building confidence in your bike and realising that it's, more than likely, far more capable than you are. I still use the breaking techniques Tom taught, I've found them extremely useful and have started using my rear brake, finally Smile

I'd recommend mc 1,2 & 3 - Haven't done 4 because that's oop north only. Not done knee down either.

Sounding a bit like an advert, I'll stop now.

I was actually planning on booking an advanced riding course in the spring time, at my local school.

I may go for this one though, if it's as good as it appears.

It's worth it, i've done MC1. Its not an advanced riding course as such, its more about how the bike works and the physics involved in it.

It teaches you that your the limiting factor, and how when left to do its own thing the bike is inherently stable, it doesn't really touch on road craft.

You do things like riding over large objects to teach you that you not automatically going to crash, counter steering, breaking properly things like that.

In case you're not aware, his bike maintenance is even better.

I've seen the knee down courses advertised on Facebook,as a new rider would something like this be worth doing to build confidence?

Why not though? I am mostly learning kneedowns/wheelies and whatnot on my own (which is what they tend to combine)... but I see the benefits of using them.

I'd agree with M.C. on the above.

Getting your knee down should come further down the line of your priorities and needs as a new rider.

One step as a time, as they say. If you try running before you can walk, the results can be very unpleasant to say the least when it comes to motorbikes.

So, what are the benefits of wheelies?

Even being able to get your knee down on public roads doesn't offer much,if any real advantage imo.

Don't get me wrong. I've had my knee down on a number of occasions riding a particular circuit that I knew like the back of my hand but, I really don't think it helped in any way. Although it did feel like an achievement at the time. It's not something I bother trying any more though.

I've done MC1 and thought it was great--in fact, I've just messaged a friend to see if he wants to book MC3, now that you've reminded me.

I'd love to do the dirt courses (2 and 4) but I'm in Essex and the locations are slightly less than convenient.

Would highly recommend. As already said, Tom is a very skilled rider but he also explains all of the physics shit in a useful and understandable way (and then goes and demonstrates the theory afterwards). Well worth the money, in my opinion. If nothing else, it's a fun day out.

I took it to mean advantage of a course.

For a lot it'd just be a waste of money.

For the other courses - the IAM place I went to offered slow speed handling etc courses included in their regular big events.

I don't particularly want to get my knee down as such, thinking about handling in general and braking.my bike is a big old lump so won't be scratching to keep up with sport bikes an stuff!
