Hell of a drop from the battery voltage!

[RickTaff]

Battery on my bike died about 2 weeks ago, was reading 10.5V. It died suddenly after being parked outside a mates house for an hour or so in the rain. Got it home and managed to bump it in 2nd gear, rode it round but it still cut out various points although bumped again first attempt. [24 hrs later, it wouldnt even bump]

Have kept it indoors since as i had no access to a charger. I now have a trickle charger, 12V 1.5amp - which has put some charge back into my battery and it now reads 12.4V when tested with a voltage tester.

Have had it on charge for about 30hrs(!!) and I thought I would put it onto the bike just to see if there was any life.... there wasnt. It still reads 12.4V but the minute I turn ignition on, it plummets to something outrageous like 0.83V.

Have been given 3 causes.

1. Battery is shorting out
2. Battery is scrap and is now worthy of the rubbish tip
3. Battery has been discharged for 2 weeks, and due to it being charged on trickle charger, it will need a few days constant charge to get back to life, so to speak

I think 2 is most likely.

What happens when you turn the lights on?

Do you have a spare battery, jump leads etc to start the bike so you can check the charging system?

10.5v sounds like a cell down probably shorted out.

First off, it's not been that cold.

Following on from that, your battery is probably fucked, but I'd want to know why.

It's been quite mild but plenty cold enough to see off a weak battery, Mine died on the 21st - a very mild day but the week before had a couple of bitter days.
