How do you find the time to ride?

Between work, kids and the odd bit of cycling (and I mean odd, as mostly I just commute) - I don't not have anytime to ride a bike.

I may get the odd hour in the summer but that would be about it. I don't really enjoy commuting by motorcycle as there is no fun way around and traffic into London starts by 630am so getting up earlier does not work either.

I am struggling to justify the cost of running a larger fun bike in addition to my scoot, if its only for a few hours or so!

How do you all do it?

I do commute, but I live in Wales, so it's fun most days no matter what I'm on.

We both work, so I don't get out as often as I would like, but that would be all the time.

It costs less than a good number of hobbies I have or have had. In some cases, a *lot* less.

It's your call if you want to pay for it or not.

Well, in similar circumstances I ended up taking a brief break from bikes.

This may not be helpful to you, as the break ended up 30 years long in my case Shocked

I'm sans kids, but with a busy work life and a lot going on around the house with near on constant renovation, it is indeed a struggle to find the time.

Ways I find of carving out the time:
1) Get up earlier, and disappear out for breakfast - make it a habit.
2) In the summer months head out around dusk - works especially well if your kids turn in at 8 for example.
3) Treat yourself to a weekend away once a year - admittedly difficult when you have kids, if you don't have an understanding partner.

Otherwise yeah, same boat. I managed loads more miles this year - last year due to a combination of things including a bit of a musculo-skeletal injury I managed a whopping 600 miles Rolling Eyes.

I've got 3 kids and another due in January. I still find time to ride somehow lol. I guess it helps having a very supportive partner who doesn't mind letting me have a few hours free, in return I make sure she has a few hours to do whatever she wants to do. It's all about getting a good understanding going and not being all about yourself. With my kids being young, they have an early bedtime so if I wanted I have a good chunk of the evening to ride too.

Nice post idea.

I don't generally do more than a few hundred miles a year on bikes, and that's even with no kids, just routine diy around the house, and no real commitments. Then again most of my bikes are rarely running all year round or in bits.

Between mountain biking, and the other vehicle projects I've got going on, and workshop fettling, I don't with a just a 40hour working week find more than one opportunity a week on average to use a bike. I've done 32miles since having my bike dyno'd in June! Shocked

Im considering getting a small scooter and or commuter bike next year, that will only ever be cleaned and maintained, not hacked apart in the name of mad improvements, projects or tuning. That I'm hoping might allow me to get more miles in next year, as I do miss having a work/hack bike to get around, and one I can chain up and walk away from in town etc.

That is my plan as well once they get a bit bigger, but that looks like a few years away.

Mine dont turn in till about 9pm, so that the evening is a write off.

I need to find a better balance perhaps.

London

I think this is the problem. London just isn't fun to drive around. It isn't fun to navigate at all, really. It's too busy and noone has any ounce of consideration.

I commute to work which isn't particularly far at the moment. I vary the places which I go to at lunch. And on weekends, I'll use the bike to go to places where I know I can carry stuff home. I don't need to drag the wife and kids with me to B&Q to pick up some Polyfilla. And I cherish the peace and quiet when I leave them at home!

I grab what I can but I always give myself one Sunday a month during May-Oct where it's just me and the bike otherwise I'm doing life with daughter at uni, son with aspergers, full time job and 2 dogs.
I do clean it a lot when I have the odd hour here or there, kind of helps to build up the excitement for the next ride.

Wife / 3 kids / puppy

Commute daily on it and yes its not great fun taking the direct route for me (M6 for 95% of it). But if im not in a rush, adding 30 minutes on takes me up A roads out in the country..

I do use weekends and evenings to nip to get smaller things (Beer / Milk / etc etc) from the furthest away store possible Smile

If you did decide to get rid of it - You would be fine..... Up until the first really nice day where you actually have a couple of hours to kill with no kids around etc. Then you would be gutted.

I plan on taking kids to and from places in the evenings as well as soon as they are old enough (guides / scouts etc).

Two bikes and a four year old. Never enough time to ride as much as would satisfy the appetite. Ah well, guess I'll be one of those old farts on a bimmer when the little un finally leaves home.

It's harder when you are a woman as you have to have the baby. I haven't ridden my bike for the past 18 months, due to getting pregnant and then having a c section so recovering after that.

My partner knows that I will never give up my bike for kids. My only hobby is my bike and I have missed going out on it and having some time to myself. He rarely rides his bike so I'm used to going out on my own.

I have taken my son to bsb meetings already, he first went when he was 8 weeks old and didn't mind the noise.

I think you just need to take some time out for yourself, even if it is a couple of hours a week. Surely your partner will understand that as long as you both get some time to do something you like

I have 2 kids and 2 bikes and I'm single.

I have 1 weekend a month to myself which usually rains.

I have a company car so no commuting needs.

I do not usuallt go out intentionally if it's under 12 degrees.

I do not usually go out when it is dark.

1 bike is sat un taxed and moted since September, the other has done 30 miles since its mot in October.

I did however manage 3k miles on the gsxr alone and 1000 of that was a long weekend away.

It is a sod. Most of my riding is commuting now, which takes some of the shine off of evening and weekend pleasure jaunts.

Having multiple bikes helps to keep the daily grind fresh, although I have to concede that three... oh allah... may be too many.

We have three bikes, and one puppy.

Puppy hilarious, rescue dog, runs towards fireworks. Doesn't bark at the doorbell, or let us know when people are knocking on the door or the window, ignores my Honda, goes mental when I start the 2 stroke. Laughing

I can honestly say that I don't think that I have made a single essential journey on a bike for years, rode to see someone who was terminally ill once, that was about 5 years ago. I ride bikes because I like riding bikes.

Yeah, I make trips on my bikes, visiting friends in the evening etc, but if I added up those trips and converted them into taxi fares, I'd probably be saving money.

I make the time, I get an urge to ride, I have to ride, it drives me nuts if I don't. Longest I've not ridden in the last 11 years is 2 weeks, and that was when I came home from NZ via Australia and Singapore.

I got a bike to avoid paying a stupid amount to park in Uxbridge for work.

brought it with me when I moved north of Manchester and then replaced it with the ZZR,

I commute daily on it, take a little country lane route on a morning to get to the motorway which I found due to avoiding roadworks on the motorway, sometimes I take the longer way home, wife is fine with this from time to time provided I get home to put our daughter to bed at least twice a week, preferably more but no earache if I don't due to work / traffic.

weekends are usually reserved for family time, but often can get a morning / afternoon.
