Zzr600 starting problems

Hey guys, I'm new here so I'm not 100% sure if I've posted this in the right section. my bike is a zzr600 2001 model (y reg). Earlier on this afternoon, I attempted to start it for the first time in 2 weeks. I put the key in the ignition and turned it, dashboard lit up fine. I pressed the start button for a second or two and the engine just turned over but would not start, and when I released the button, for some reason the engine kept trying to turn over and this continued even after pressing the kill switch(red button) and removing the key from the ignition. Eventually after about 1 minute the battery died. I managed to borrow a battery charger from a neighbor and as soon as it was hook up the bike started trying to turn over on it's own again...while the key was in my pocket! The only way to stop it was to disconnect the wires from the battery. Now the battery is on charge but I have absolutely no idea what's wrong with the bike so I was hoping someone here could help me as it would be much appreciated. I'm a lost soul when it comes to mechanics but I will get my dad to have a look if someone could give me an idea on what may be causing it.

The starter relay switch / contacts are stuck / welded in the ON position.
This can be caused by wear and tear and also having a low state of a battery when starting. I suggest a new switch and checking the battery voltage to be 12.8v the morning after in warm weather and 12.6v in cold weather. It`s all about Amps really but voltage checks will do.

Starter relay. It will be near the battery, and have two thick cables going into it and a multi-plug with two or three thin wires. Replace it.

Thanks very much for the swift replies, relay switch seems to be fairly inexpensive. I was worried that it was gonna cost me an arm and a leg to fix the problem, but it seems I can relax a little now. It probably doesn't help that the bike has only been getting started once every 2 weeks, I will make sure the battery is fully charged before attempting to start it next time.

Also check the battery earth connection to the frame and the engine earth strap to the frame if fitted.

Just a quick update, I replaced the starter relay but now when I connect the battery, I get nothing. No neutral lights or lights around the clock, and the bike won't turn over now. Also I've checked the fuse box under the seat and they seem to be fine

Stupid question alert. You have recharged the battery after it going flat?

Check the fuses under your seat, too.
