I use a brake disc alarm on my bike, and as most other folk who use one can attest, it's a good idea to use of those hi-viz reminder cables between lock and handlebar. This sort of thing:

https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcT_mSVeJoBahaI8Z3vDdokAQhmeVbqcymmUWAuaKSjyopLCb7TYPg

I bought one, but it was only about a metre long and is no use for me at all, because I always choose to use the lock on the back wheel (why doesn't everyone - a heavy bike is way harder to manhandle into a van with a locked back wheel than a locked front wheel). So I need a cable probably 2-3m long when stretched; I can't find anything longer than 1.2m. Anybody found one? Or know of a source of that coiled cable, maybe used for a different purpose? I haven't come to grief yet, but suspect I'm on borrowed time Shocked

Yes I could buy 2 or 3 and tie them together or something, but I like the original because it's compact and neat, and would be far less bulky (eg for fitting in a jacket pocket or under the seat) than using several separate items, or a length of uncoiled cable.

It's only a reminder so why not use some other form of reminder, like a laggy band round your brake/throttle. That way if you do forget, the band will be squeezing on your front brake to some degree and mean you have less chance of doing the derp.

If you have as disc lock alarm surely it goes off if you forget to remove it and get on your bike. If it doesn't it's not doing it's job!

When I was using a disk lock, I used a short piece of rubber tubing that fitted tightly onto the blade of the disk lock key.
When I parked up, I had to take the tubing off the lock key to use it, so I put it onto my ignition key and left it there. When I came back to the bike, I couldn't put the ignition key in without moving that bit of rubber back to the disk lock key, so I remembered to undo the disk lock.

Buy two and loop together.

Or as stated above use something else, like a crusty cum-sock over the mirror.

Think I would just loop two normal ones together, but such things do exist

I use an alarmed disc lock. I don't have a reminder cable - serious question, I only have to look at the thing for it to set off and wake the street up at 5am. Surely if you get on the machine with it still on it will start wailing at you?

Edit. Polarbear already got there

I just loop mine around each hand grip and straight across the bars. It doesn't need to be attached to the lock to remind you.

that's why I was putting one round the handle bar with a small padlock to maybe stop it being nicked

Oh I like it - I reckon that's the winner! (now I just need to find a suitable bit of tubing that will fit both keys Laughing )

In response to some of the other ideas:
For me and my-ever decreasing number of brain cells, a reminder has to be something I won't forget to 'set' when I lock up the bike, which is why I liked the idea of having a hi-viz reminder cable permanently attached to the lock; if it's dangling off the wheel when I've locked the bike I wouldn't forget to use it. And interesting that there are long such cables around; however I still can't find one outside for sale the US of A, with prohibitive postage.

And although I haven't yet tried to ride off with the lock in place, I'm pretty sure it would be possible to do so before the alarm sounded, especially as it has a short lag time.

Get a long loop end galvanised steel cable, wrap yellow tape around it. I picked up a 4mm 3ft long about £9. Good thing is its a little added security granted not much bit can loop it anywhere, loop through the disc lock alarm versions and even if its dodgy like my oxford screamer that goes off when you dont want it to but not if you do... but anyone trying to pull bars or move it will pull the disc lock and set the alarm off anyway.

Alot of people park their bike in gear so locks the rear wheel.

+1

I was very grateful that the extra width also stopped my keys falling down a storm drain in Italy.
