The asking prices are ludicrous. You're paying for exclusivity, literally.
I asked a local eBay seller why his bike was worth so much and he went full autie-rage. So based on that sample set, I'd suggest that 100% of them are in the hands of Tefloons now and best avoided. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I could easily get a newer and faster fazer 1000 or even a leggly street triple.
Am I missing something, or do these just command a premium price? |
RE W650 (as opposed to W800 i.e.) - yes they are very over priced. However they are also on average a grand(-ish) less than a Bonneville of similar condition / year. This is partly why they're so dear. If the Bonny didn't exist I tend to think the W would be significantly cheaper - but their price is somehow buoyed by the Triumph.
They look well and're good to ride - but they're what some people call a (ahem) 'pride of ownership' bike. Which imo means a polisher. It takes a fair bit of effort to get them looking good again if you get caught out in rain. Also that under-square power is great for short shifting - but you'll want more. Remember, they don't even make 50bhp. True, there is more up top - and although the bike doesn't complain much when made to work, you'll feel like a bit of a cad when using the spurs. Incidentally they're not as comfy as they look, for while the upper body ergos are sorted, there's something a bit unyielding about the seat.
Heavy too - but with weight seemingly quite low. Which is fine until the pegs go down, then you think hang on, that was barely even leaning. For all that, it does handle quite accurately imo.
There was a useful dedicated forum...until two weeks ago. Seems to have been nuked, and not even archived. Not sure what happened there, as - predictably - it was all seniors discussing brands of pipe tobacco.
Iirc I paid £3.4k for mine a few years ago, and flogged it last August. No way I should ever have bought it. Think I lost 500 on it. They're all mint, mostly - or v. tidy at least. And they do lend themselves to customising. I always thought Jamie Whitham's scrambler looked good (although I'd have kept the front light and disc brake):

tl;dr - they ARE way too dear, but note from eBay completed listings that most priced at £3.5k aren't actually selling, and I'm really not sure they ever will. Finally, fuck all this retro shit. ____________________ "Life is a sexually transmitted disease and the mortality rate is one hundred percent."

Most sellers do seem determined to believe that they are "worth" that though. All day long, mate.
As you note, a lot of garage queens, so it's not like there will be many owners who really need to sell them to buy a daily commuter.
Honest (briefly NSFW-ish) review. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I looked at a local W650 when shopping after the Electra was stolen - nice, would have one, don't want to pay the hipster tax. ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Don't take it personally.

The post-2008 fuel injected ones look to be a fair bit better on that score.
Better made, longer service intervals, single oil rather than a separate gearbox, non-exploding sprag clutches (particularly 2010 onwards), self adjusting tappets even - how many other bikes have those?
I reckon they are just about viable as daily commuters, if you're not in a hurry. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I was once seriously considering a W800.
The planets didn't align, but I did do a lot of research and my conclusion was they are good bikes, but a bit ponderous, pedestrian and lacking in character.
I was having trouble deciding between the Kwak and a Hinckley Bonny, but now I've ridden the Triumph, that's where I would put my money.
Comparing what I know to what I've read, the Bonny is livelier, sharper handling and generally more enjoyable.
Plus there's an aftermarket industry for extras/goodies, which doesn't exist for the W. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........
