I'll keep this short.

I commute 250 miles a week. 200 of those miles are national speed limits over the hills.

I'm 6 ft 2 and my knees are starting to dislike the cramped legs of the zzr600 - oh and it's bloody old and going brown.

With service intervals of 7.5k and a tank range of 300 miles, why shouldn't I buy a V-strom 650?

It would certainly do the job, though not as good a tank range as a V-Strom - about 200 miles if you're easy on the throttle. Still lots of nice, cared-for examples around for under £3k (under £2k if you're not so fussy about condition and mileage).

I'm also 6' 2'', and find it all-day comfortable.

Budget would be around 3 grand I suppose.

I thought I'd be told it'd be worse than death to have one, I just thought long services and being able to a weeks commuting without visiting the petrol station would be quite nice.

I do like the look of the Tiger 800s. And I do like the fazer thous too.

Stinkwheel, you're right I do like the ZZRs and I would love a 1100 despite their age I'm sure they won't be as high mileage as my 600 will be when it collapses.

I just need something that doesn't kill my knees as much, as I'm getting older (I'm not even 30 yet) I'm starting to value comfort on my commutes.

Whatever I get needs to be happy riding all weathers and no cleaning. Just routine servicing. Thanks

The vstorm is a nice easy bike to ride and I find it very comfortable. If you're looking for comfort, practicality and economy it's great (note there's a recall out on stators though). Carries a pillion very well too. It is not however hughely exciting. Nor is it in any way sexy.

Many people prefer the 650 to the 1000 but I've yet to try the 1000 and feel it might be more what I'm looking for.

TIger 800 is a bit more soulful but didn't quite fit me (short arms). Gave me a sore back very quickly but I'm not sure why exactly.
