Just trying to gauge whether this is a bad idea or a really bad idea. I'm considering rebuilding the forks I bent a few years back, one of the stanchions is slightly bent:

I read something about you're not meant to bend them back if the metal's creased, the only sign I can see is this (looks like it's from the bottom yoke):

If you are rebuilding anyway get a new Stanchion.

In my experience Fork Straightening is ~£90, New OEM Stanchions are ~£150

The main reason I have had forks straightened is so I don't spend the time rebuilding them and I don't have to fork out(geddit) for new seals/bushes oil etc.

I've had it done 3 times and never had a problem. I would advise against non OEM Stanchions though. I bought some from ABE in Woolwich. Within a year they had some fairly severe rust. They were under warrenty so I returned them and they rechromed them for me (and didn't seem happy about doing it) This was a pain as it took weeks todo and I had to replace seals etc. etc.

I've never had trouble with OEM stanchions.

I have a Tarozzi Paolo & Franco stanchion (are they any good?) for the other fork that was badly bent, getting another one would make it an uneconomical repair*.

I found a place a while ago that rebuilt forks for £60, I was hoping if I took them a single loose stanchion they'd straighten it for a score or something Smile

*I was originally going to rebuild the forks ages ago, then I realised both forks were bent (one looked straight on the bike) and a used pair came up on eBay.

No idea if they are, but Italians aren't know for rust free vehicles Laughing

I've looked at the photos now(images blocked at work) Looks like a crease to me.

I can't imagine anyone straightening it for £20 and it being right.

Does £60 include parts? If so It'll be the shittest seals you can get OEM are £10-15 each, and it really is false economy to skimp on them

Good point Very Happy I tried to flog it on ebay but no one wanted to buy it.

Can't remember precisely the place, I think it was in Greenwich if that helps Confused Isn't this someone on here? https://www.motoliner.com/motorcycle-fork-yoke-straightening.php (£72 for both assembled).

I got some athena fork seals and some crappy Chinese dust seals as they came with fork protectors Neutral

Edit: think it was ABE

If it is ABE I think, they make them in house, I thought that italian company where a different group.

Motoliner are great I've used them before, I don't think you can do it if there is a crease and that looks like a crease to me, but worth a go.

There's a definite lip when you run your finger over it. I just remembered I asked the same question when I was repairing the bike Embarassed https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=292947

It maybe my eyes, they are old, but is that a crack if so new is your only option. If not straightening to correct more than couple of mm at centre run out is pushing it and risk a real crack .The steel they are made out of if oem is a tensile steel and they are not very malleable and could surface crack then over a period of use fracture usually at a interesting time for the rider. If you insist on straightening take to an expert who know how far you can straighten bent fork legs.

I'd suggest that's too far gone. Mine were about the same and the recommended place (can't remember the name) advised against it, which is what I thought they'd say tbh. I went for new OEM.

It's more like a deep scratch. Bike's an MT-03. Best option might be to try and sell the stanchion I do have on eBay again (just a bit cheaper), keep the rough forks on the bike and sell/throw away the bent ones.

Only other option might be if an FZ6 (S1) stanchion would fit, but the chances of finding a cheap pair in good condition's probably fairly slim. Part numbers are different, 5YK... vs 5VK Thinking

Not the bent one, the unused replacement I bought. Think it's a no on the FZ6 forks BTW (surprisingly), despite being similar they're different.
