Absolute Mother of a Siezed Axle

The new chain and sprocket arrived, so I began to set to work on the GN125. However, the rear axle will. not. fucking. budge.

I've been trying to get it out for hours. I've twatted it with a rubber mallet more times than I know.
I've taken the entire wheel and swing arm off, laid them so that the axle is suspended and hit that fucker so much that I'm physically tired. After several hours, it's now sticking out about an inch out of the other side.

The axle turns freely. Put a wrench over the nut (the bit that's part of the axle) and it turns no problem. But moving it horizontally? No chance.

Any ideas?

Spray some penetrating oil on the bits you can see, wack it back in again, more oil then try tapping it out again.

Heat gun or plus gas (penetrant oil).

If you're having to hit it that hard then you might want to consider replacing the wheel bearings (less than £5 each) as you may end up damaging them. Also using heat could damage the seals if you're not careful. How big a hammer are you using?

Cut it with a hacksaw and get a replacement from a breakers or eBay.

A rubber mallet. Dunno how big. About the size of a coffee mug.
I thought about cutting it off, but then it's still stuck in the wheel itself, so I'd have to replace that too.

Hitting it with something made by Thor rather than Fisherprice will help. I generally find that a 2lb lump hammer and a big swing will shift most things.

Sounds daft, but there's generally a circlip or two that you can never see because everything is covered in grease and road dust. I've seen tiny circlips give a hydraulic press some trouble.

The rubber mallet is just to tickle things. If you want to actually shift stuff, 2lb lump hammer.

It's not like you can't make it any worse than a wheel that you can't put a new tyre on.

Axles are pretty soft, twatting it with a hammer is going to ruin the end very quickly. You need to use a piece of soft ally to protect the end of the axle. Putting a tube over the large end and driving the axle into the tube held vertically on the floor will help a lot too.

My 125 had a seized rear axle... it stayed in. Tried everything, took a blowtorch to it, even twatted it to within an inch of its life.

Heavy duty hammer+block of wood between said items usually works for me. Get a mate (wife will do) to hold the block of wood and give it an almighty wallop. If that doesn't work try a heavy duty punch centered on the mid point of the axle. Tap it, don't whack...

Could deffo be a broken circlip or bearing stopping it sliding out though...

You could try a Kango hammer with a metal block protecting the axle from the chisel, vibrate the bastard into submission.

Knock it out as far as it will go and squirt the dry end with penetrating oil , then knock it back in.
Repeat many times.
Each time you will get the oil in a bit further.

If you can get some rotation on the axle, that will help.

Probably sprocket carrier bearing spacer siezed in place. I have had this, chopped the axle. Large sledge hammer wouldnt shift it, almost bent the swingarm.

I just bought a dead blow hammer and a set of punches (that go up to 9.5mm). I'm gonna have to buy a new rear axle anyway, so I'm going to hammer the living daylights out of it until it gets the fuck out... tomorrow, as I just put the kids to bed.

Seriously, do a short vid of it with you manipulating it for people to see (the axle, don't get kinky). Couple of experienced peeps here might save you a bit of bother.

Put the nut back on but keep it at the top of the axle to protect it and also give yourself a bigger area to hit. Just a normal everyday hammer will do and a bit of time and muscle. You will need to change the bearings as this is what the axle is stuck on. Also give the axle a good clean afterwards.
