Not familiar with your bike but it sounds happier with a freer air flow (without cover), so what is wrong with the carb if it was ok before?
Is the carb airtight to the engine and does the choke shut off?
Be carefull not to run on a weak mixture.

it didnt seem quite 100% so took it off to clean, it is air tight to to engine and choke does shut off, ive seen two posts with the exact same problem but there was no answer as to why this happens i googled the symptoms of it and both posts were on here.

One of the hoses is an air vent, is it clogged or kinked?

The carb is on the rhs of the crank behind a cover (because it has a rotary valve on the end of the crank.)

If it only runs without the cover, it's either running incredibly rich or the pipe from the airbox is blocked.

Did you poke anything in the jet holes to 'clean' them?

Remove the air filter from the airbox and try it.

when you are putting the cover back on is it kinked/restricting the petrol flow to the petrol pipe if thats possiable.

Sounds like you've unblocked the main jet emulsion tube to where it should be and thats causing it to run rich now, either the last owner adjusted the air corrector screw to compensate or the air filter is blocked or now causing it to run rich. The std airbox even with a new filter is a restriction on the GP100 and they went much better without the entire thing TBH! ( pre harmonic airboxes tuned to your engine days!)

OR you screwed something up like float valve sticking or height is now different causing it to flood the carb !!
