PostPosted: 21:41 - 05 Jun 2017    Post subject: Waiting for clear exit at junction like this Reply with quote

The 'keep clear' area is now yellow as a box junction:
In a car you must wait until the exit is clear [unlike the car in this pic] and keep it clear as I understand it.
My question is,if you are on a bike can you pull up alongside the car that has crossed over the box and is giving way to join the main road,or do you have to wait until the exit is clear [as I do before asking this question] also?

Cheers

Stop at KFC and wait for the traffic to die down. I would just wait behind the keep clear, as I rush around a lot less now I'm older, and there's always the danger of cozy twat car drivers stearing one way and looking the other, but that's just me. Others will do it different, and probably better.

if you filter up the right of that lot expect a car to turn in off main road and wipe you out

I know that area well as used to commute past it daily

Everyone who doesn't take that left option is turning right, you might risk going up inside and shooting out before first car if they seem dozy, or go at same time and continue the undertake.

dont filter right, as above you could get sammiched between car waiting and the car turning left off the main road.

filter on the left, block the leading cars view to the left and pin it before they have a chance to confirm the way is clear.. then again you could just wait until the way is clear..

third option, just filter slightly past the hatchings and wait for the cars in front to go

In real life, sure, I'd use as much of the the road as possible. It's not their lane.

On test, which is what I suspect you may be asking about, I'd sit in the middle of the lane and wait patiently for the exit to be clear. The more time you can legitimately waste, the better.

I'd wait, there doesn't appear to be a major advantage by filtering to the front.

I'd imagine you'd just antagonise the car drivers by filtering past.

It would depend on the density of traffic. Personally I'd very carefully filter past, making double damned sure I wasn't putting myself into a blind turnout in any hurry. Getting into a spill in that picture, injuries aside, would have your insurance company wagging the finger.

On test; I'd just wait, examiners don't mind filtering but if you're doing it in what would classed as a high risk scenario they'll fail you on a whim. That's not to say every examiner would, but a real dvla Derek wouldn't be impressed.

I would be filtering using the right hand lane, on one wheel. This is so that when a car is coming the other way, I can just drive straight over the top of them.

Seriously though, I would be filtering to the front as long as I could see where potential cars could be emerging from.

Take the empty junction to the left, the sharp right onto the main road Smile

Given the small number of cars, I would just wait...

Increase that to 7 or more cars and I would probably filter up and take the left like pudder has said.

Its there and empty. Use it Smile

Yes,I mean the 'rule' not what we'd all do,if you see what I mean:
If you're in a car,you must wait outside/behind the box junction [wich it is now]
until the exit is clear or enter only if oncoming is preventing you turning right,or by other vehicles waiting to turn right'....
So the car in the box, if he's doing a right,is legal [in a yellow box junction] but shouldn't be in the 'Keep Clear' no matter which way he's turning??
That aside, you are right Rog in my thinking because of a 'test' situation :I've never found a satisfactory answer to whether the bike [if he pulls up alongside [but whats the point anyway?] is breaking a 'rule/law' by not waiting for the exit to be clear?....
As I said, there's no gain really,I just wait outside the box until they bugger off,but I mention it as an 'instructor' was giving me grief in the ear going 'go on go on' ,and I ignored it and waited until the exit was clear.I think he was wrong.I stayed where I am sure an examiner would wish to see me positioned, holding my space [we were doing a right] just slight right of centre and waiting for my turn at the 'Give Way'..
Also another thing, which is kind of related to the first situation:Say you filter up front to a 'Stop' at the lights and they're on red and when they change, did you know it is illegal to overtake the 'lead' car?? [the one you pull up next to at the lights],I mean in real life I always do it,the whole point of getting up there in the first place is to 'loose' them behind, isn't it?!!...But maybe not on the Test then, but worth knowing,if only for that reason, because I didn't know that.....! Thumbs Up

As long as you don't stop in the box junction, you're fine.
Who the fuck waits behind cars ?

I'd just be very careful at that junction, simply because that's where I saw a GSXR 600/750 burning to death last year and the place being pumped with foam from the blue watch lads.

Maybe it's a cursed junction for bikes? Laughing

Seriously, there's a high school and primary school very near there, so at peak times they'll be loads of dozy parents looking everywhere except where they are going, and moody teens walking across the road in front of traffic like it's invisible.

alright mate, yes I know what you mean.....But the point is I'm not talking about 'this' junction,it could be anywhere in the country, not this specific one,if you see what I'm saying...I just used it to illustrate my question on the 'rule/law' concerning bikes at these type of junctions....Blimey,that GSX was unlucky as it's a fairly tame junction to be honest, loads of good view of the road, left or right, but as you say it very much depends on the time of day...I generally try and avoid the school run's wherever possible, but I find if you aim carefully, they soon get out the way.....!

Seriously, some people wouldn't last 10 minutes on the streets of London if this kind of junction bothers them.
It wouldn't even register to me, there is nothing special about it.

Box junctions are just not to be stopped in unless your exit right is blocked by oncoming traffic.

Do not enter unless your exit is clear is the wording by law and if you exit it without stopping, it was clear, wasn't it?
